How do you clean the black powder rings off the front of revolvers cylinders?

Try RB-17 and a good toothbrush. Worked wonders on my S&W M19-3 when I first got it.

Iosso Gunbrite takes the powder ring off of the front of the cylinder in about 30 seconds with very little rubbing and does not affect the surface finish.

I always remove the cylinder and yoke before cleaning the rest of the gun, and let them soak in a jar of Hoppe's No. 9. By the time the rest of the gun is clean, the crud is loosened up fairly well. A little effort with a used tooth brush usually gets most of it, and as needed, I use a bronze-bristled brush with light rather than heavy pressure.
