I'm almost certain that I'm going to try selling my EAA Witness .45 so I'll have some gun money to pick out something new. I've been lightly considering a 1911 for awhile and I understand that this may be nearly offensive to some, but how are 1911's in 9mm? Are there any others besides the Springfield? I'm wondering because of ammo costs and I've found out that across the board, I pretty much shoot 9MM way better than I do .45.

Nothing offensive, 9mm 1911s are getting very popular for IDPA - ESP Division.

The only other 9mm 1911 I know of is the STI Trojan. It is considerably more expensive than a Springfield, but is a nicer made gun. Probably worth the bucks.

I think Dan Wesson has made a few but they seem not to be a regular item.

You should be able to find a Dan Wesson Pointman in 9x19 from a distributor.

There are also some old Colts in 9mm.

Alternatively, you could find a .38Super 1911 and have a 9mm barrel (and extractor & ejector) fitted.

I did OK with my Colt Combat Commander in 9mm in the May Mail-In Match.
It is not the most accurate 1911 I have, but it will do.

Probably will run you about $200 more than the Springfield. Lexus to Yugo as for fit and finish. I own two Trojans (one 9mm). A 1911 in 9mm is a great shooting gun.

I've put a few hundred rounds through my buddy's 9mm 1911 and I've learned to like it alot. If I wasn't already 9mm heavy, I'd consider one ;)

Mark, since we're in California, I just looked up the CA DOJ approved list and only the Springfield 1911s are in 9mm.

I want a Dawson Precision in .45 but the suckers aren't approved in CA.

I very much like the 9x19 in a 1911 for fun and inexpensive shooting. I actually have two, a Trojan 5.0 and a Colt Series 80 Government Model. The Colt is a switch-barrel; it was originally chambered in 9x23.

Cool things about 9x19 in the 1911:

1) Very little recoil and wrist torque. I chose the 9x19 because my girlfriend is very bothered by recoil. She has had carpal tunnel syndrome (even had surgery) for quite some time, and the torque of a pistol under recoil is a big issue. The 1911 is really good for her.

2) With the fully supported barrel in the Trojan, 9mm +P+ is no problem to shoot. When I shoot the Trojan, I tend to use much hotter rounds than my girlfriend. When I want to shoot really hot loads, I (would) grab the Colt with the 9x23 barrel (which is at Tripp Research at the moment).

3) Great accuracy. I have shot several 1" groups at twenty-five yards with handloads.

4) Lots of fun.

5) Inexpensive Winchester Value-Packs. Great for the girlfriend to shoot.

If one is going to buy a 9mm 1911, I recommend the Trojan over the Springfield Armory. I had to wait about four weeks for STI to build my Trojan, but it is one heck of a pistol. Much better finish and attention to detail, and the STI barrel is great. I ordered mine with a Heinie rear sight, regular thickness grips, and a hard chrome finish. My Trojan has never failed with Metalform magazines. I think the Trojan is a great deal for what STI charges.

A lot of handguns are excessively big for 9mm.

I've a Polish Radom that's about the same size as a 1911. My Beretta 92 is monsterous compared to either, but it is high cap.

The flip side of that coin is that recoil and muzzle flip is tamed even more in the larger, heavier guns.

I thought about picking up a 1911 in 9mm, but then I lucked into my Hi Power, so now I'm thinking about getting rid of the Beretta instead.

Good Point ! I have both, & the 1911 is excellent (after some work) and light. The HP out of the box was heavy and lousy, but with some work can be made crisp and acceptably light. (Though it's never gonna be a 1911.) :)
