I like to clean all of my firearms at least once a year ,especially the old ones, to inspect them for rust and other corrosion. This habit/excuse usually gives me an reason to shoot them first in some manner. :) This past weekend, my son and I took our Savage model 24 out to the trap range. After we had shot all the 12ga shells our budget had allowed us to bring, we retrieved the 20 ga model 24 out of its case to see if we could hit anything with it.

Here is a picture...

We were pleasantly surprised at the ease and accuracy of the lil gun. The 24 inch barrel had no problem reaching out there to get the job done. The drop from 12 ga to 20 ga had very little difference in perceived recoil. Either that or my shoulder was already numbed from 100 shots with the 12 ga! Mr McCracken is right when he says that any gun that fits can be used for trap.

I will admit that I did NOT try to hit the clay with the upper 22wmr barrel. :p However I did sight in the 22wmr barrel a couple of days earlier last week. After adjustments, I was able to get 3 shots in a one inch grouping at 50 yards leaning over the side of my truck for steady with iron sights. Good enough for me!

Variety is the spice of life sometimes. I see no reason to get bored with only one firearm :)

Thanks, you made my day. I had one of these with a 22 LR on top. Added a peep sight and got dime sized 25 yard groups which ttranslated out as Minute Of Squirrel Head.

Glad you had a good day....

You are welcome. I didn't expect the accuracy I got from the rifled barrel. As you already know these guns have been around since dirt. I just never thought of them as high quality tack drivers. I chose to sight mine in at 50 yards. My eyes can't even see a squirrel farther than that. :)

I sold my other model 24 two weeks ago. It was a 22lr/.410 in good shape I got for $135. Sold it two days later for $250. It was the first gun I ever sold now I think of it! Kinda bought it for that reason though. Used the proceeds toward my son's Spartan O&U for trap.

I chose to keep the 20ga/22wmr model for the cheaper 20ga shells and I really like the 22WMR round as well.

Good Shooting!

I love my Model 24. I too will take it to the range and shoot some trap with it on occasion.

I have a .223 on top and a 20ga on bottom. Nothing like one gun that will do multiple tasks well. Great accuracy as well about 2in groups at 100yds with a steady rest and iron sights and will break clays all day long.

As was explained to me, the added stiffness imparted by being joined to the shotgun barrel makes the barrel harmomics more consistent.

Mine loved Brenekkes. The peep serendiptiously held the same zero for both slugs in the 20 gauge barrel and Remington HPs upstairs.

IMO, the 24 series are a lot of gun for the money.
