Bringing a shotgun to California

Gentlemen:

My brother just purchased a shotgun for my 14 yr. old niece, a 20ga. Rem 870. She's been living here in WI with my family, and will fly back out to California tomorrow. The airline is OK with the transport. My question is: are there any issues regarding the transfer of the shotgun to my niece? What would she have to expect in Cali regarding the pick-up of the firearm, since it was purchased for her as a gift? Or could she just mail the shotgun to herself from here? Would it have to go to an FFL if she herself mails it?

Thanks

she'll have to have an FFL do the transfer in state.

ship the gun to an FFL, have them transfer it to her (dros and everything).

If it is already hers when she arrives in California, then I do not believe *any* transfer need take place.

Why not just have her bring it back with her on her flight? Saves all the hassle of 'shipping'.

Rifles & Shotguns are not as bad as handguns for registration, etc.

But you need better advice than this board can give you. Legally, her age may prevent her from ownership. I don't know.

it needs to be transferred to her, or her parents in california.

a CA resident cannot buy firearms out of state.

Better for it to remain in WI for the time being. I'll contact CA DOJ to find out the proper way of getting the firearm to its intended young owner in Californicate.

What a silly hassle for ordinary American citizens.

Thanks for the input gentlemen

Not to be too nitpicky, Andrew, but that is flat wrong.

There is absolutely no restriction on California residents buying anything out of state.

The only laws regard ownership, registration and possession IN STATE, and transportation of same between states. It is *totally* legal to buy machine guns in states that allow them, as long as they remain there and are not brought back into California.

Since shotguns are fully legal in California, you can buy them anywhere, as long as you register them when you bring them in to California.

FYI California has no registration system for long guns brought in from out of state. Only scary handguns must be registered within, IIRC, ten whole days.

The shotgun will be privately tranfered to my brother when he visits in a few weeks - private transfers being still allowed in WI. It will then fly home to LA and to my niece. Thanks for the help, gentlemen.
