Because so many here carry them, I want to alert folks to this kaboom.
Public service announcement only........The jury is still out.

Wow. If a cracked frame caused that, why wasn't it detected prior to shipping it? If S&W are aware there is a problem, why don't they suspend deliveries of the 340, till the problem is resolved?

This really looks like a frame problem...wow. I would be highly upset if that happened to me.

One of the reasons I rerely use 357 ammo in 340PD. I figure if it is rated for 357 then a steady diet of 38 will lead to a longer lifetime of use.

That may not be the case. It appears that sometimes the frames develop a crack, running from the bottom of the barrel hole to the yoke cut-out. When or if this happens, the barrel will blow off and go downrange sooner or later. These frames are forged, not cast, but the way.
It appears that Smith & Wesson is not going to issue a general recall, but might be replacing frames when guns come in for service with unrelated problems. None of this has anything too do with the lock, which is a different issue.
I don't (and won't) own one of these revolvers. Those that do can make up their own minds. :scrutiny:

I bought a new 340pd and owned it all of a month. Each time I fired it, it felt like my gun blew up like that. Can't imagine it being in my hand when it actually did something like what's in those pics.
