I came across a Ruger security six today with a Colt Python 6" barrel  Is this a one time freak or was there a custom shop that made a practice of it ? The gun did not have a stock rear sight, it was much nicer, the Ruger end of the gun was polished and had a Colt like blue job.

IIRC you have come across a "Couger". A Frankenstein's monster of a Security Six with a Colt Python barrel. There was other variations such as the "Smolt" .... a S & W 'K' frame with w Python Barrel, mostly to be different though some claimed that the Python's barrel was more accurate than the pistol's stock barrel. They were made around the 1980s but I don't know who made them first.

These guns were usually made for the police-only PPC matches back in the 70's and early 80's when revolvers ruled and the furthest shots were 100 yards. Since the police have switched to semi-auto pistols and the target ranges were shortened to 25 yards; these revolver aren't made anymore. Besides using Python barrels, gunsmiths also fit these revolvers with custom heavy bull barrels.
