Ok guys, I know you get one of these "I'm new, help me" threads every couple days, so here's mine.

I'll be turning 21 in Aug. so I can get my permit. Does anyone know of any information that would be of help to me? I see people post stuff about thier states' laws and things and just wonder where I can gather the same type of information about Alabama. Any help?

The most critical thing is the "use of deadly force rules".

Any good gunshop should have some sort of gun law publication written specifically for your state. In Calif we have "How To Own A Gun And Stay Out Of Jail In California" by Machtinger, in WA state Dave Workman has a good reference...you don't tend to see one series of the same book across multiple states, because each one will be written by a resident of that state who really masters the stuff.

Whatever it is, you NEED that book. Period.

What's on Packing is a good "quick ref" but it is NOT adequate for the new permitholder except when sorting out reciprocity, how to apply, etc.

Hey Jumbo! Welcome. Ditto on the packing.org resource. If you haven't got a copy yet, buy Mas Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme":

Thanks guys... I'll stop in soon and see what the shop has. My dad has a couple guns already, I'll be getting them when I turn 21. I'm not sure either of them are right for carry, maybe a little too big. I have a S&W 610 Classic 10mm 6 1/2 barrel, and a Ruger P94 .40 S&W.

I've already talked to SO, they said to some in fill out some paperwork and they'll check my record and I should be in and out with my permit in under 15 minutes. Sweet! Now all I need is info as to wether I can shoot someone just for entering my house (I know some states have a law like this), or if I need to let the BG slap me around for a minute before I declare a Gihad on him... LoL! Just kidding by the way, I hope to never have to use it.

As far as I know if there is a threat to your life or others then you can shoot. But once the threat ends you must stop. There might be somekind of "Shoot if they enter your house" law here but I have never heard of it.

Jumbo,
What makes your S&W 610 a "Classic", or any other S&W for that matter?

Dang! I got whiplash when you moved us, Justin. I wuz right in the middle of posting and Shazam! We're over here. myneckhurtsImaysue. or not.

Jumbo: what I infer from your post (yes, with a lot of assumptions) is that you don't have a very deep understanding of what it means to have/carry/use a deadly weapon in self-defense, let alone any other use. Forgive me if I underestimate your experience, please.

There are considerations which are extremely important for you to understand thoroughly before you decide to own, carry, or use a gun.

Read here, and ask questions, and follow tips and links that the good folks here will offer, then think about it, and digest advice offerred.

There are no simple solutions or answers.

My 610 Classic is a "Classic" because it says "Classic" on the barrel.

I know that owning a gun, and deciding to carry that gun is not just something that is done for fun. I joke around a lot, and I guess until you guys get to know me I should try to be more serious than usual. Leatherneck, you're right on more counts than I care to comment on. Should I be looking towards a school or other training? Thanks guys.
