Jim K April 5, 2007, 09:48 PM I don't know what you want to know, but the Model 81 was a slightly revised Model 8. The Model 8 was made from 1906-1936 in the four "Remington" calibers, .25, .30, .32, and .35, roughly paralleling the Winchester 94's .25-35, .30-30, .32 Special, and .38-55. The Model 81, called the "Woodmaster" (a name Remington has applied to its semi-auto center fire sporting rifles ever since), was introduced in 1936 and made into 1950, when the Model 740 was introduced. The Model 81 was also made in .300 Savage, but the .25 Remington was dropped. It is a Browning design, long recoil, like the Browning auto shotguns. It was very popular with deer hunters where autos could be used legally, and also with police. It was available in 5 grades; the highest incorporates engraving, top quality wood and even gold inlay to suit the customer's tastes and pocketbook. 56,091 were made. To remove the barrel and barrel jacket for cleaning, make sure the rifle is unloaded, then pull the bolt to the rear until it locks. Then unscrew the fore-end screw and remove the fore-end. Then use the takedown lever to unscrew the takedown screw and pull off the barrel and barrel jacket. With modern spray cleaners available, I don't really recommend further takedown unless something needs to be fixed or replaced. Values vary, depending on the section of the country, but a standard grade in top condition will run around $600+, less for average condition. The high grades will obviously bring a lot more but each really needs to be appraised by itself. Jim swdon April 6, 2007, 08:04 AM thanks jim,for the information.this was the first one i had seen.
