How can one find out what States they can buy long guns at while being a non-resident? Or if anyone here knows , as a resident of Indiana can I drive up and buy a rifle from a store in Michigan? I have been in shops in Ohio , Kentucky and even North Carolina where they said it was legal for me to buy from them.

The legality is dependent upon the laws of both the state you live in and the state you wish to purchase the long gun in. This requires that you research the law.

My cousin lives in Florida. He came to visit me in Texas and purchsed an S&W M&P AR rifle with no problem from a dealer in Fort Worth. However, he was not sold a pistol (duh).

(B2) From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA?

A person may only acquire a firearm within the personís own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee's premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes.

so forget about handguns and check your state laws

The Wal Marts around here that still sell firearms have a poster in the gun display that shows which states residents are allowed to buy firearms in that state.

So let's throw in another scenereo.

I live in California. I travel to Florida where I have a non-resident CWP. What can I buy? Handgun? Rifle? Neither?

Utah where I also have a non-resident CHP also allows me to avoid the 10 day wait as far as I'm aware my CCW is my background check. I can buy there but only a rifle that would be legal in my home state.

I realize I can not bring an AR into California but I could leave it at the relative's house in Florida.

Yes , I made the trip up there today to the big Cabela's store in Dundee. I eneded up not buying a gun but some ammo and reloading supplies. I just did not want to drive all the way up there and find a nice rifle and not be able to buy it!
