What is the most prolific service weapon

What service weapon do you feel is presently being used by more LEO's than any other? I know many years ago most PD's seem to use the Smith & Wesson model 10 a lot.
I was wondering what the trend is now.

I'll bet a dime that it's Glock.

A few years ago, I would have said Beretta 92fs -- now, I'd say some flavor of Glock

I seem to see a lot of S&W bottom feeders in LEO holsters.

I seem to see a lot of S&W bottom feeders in LEO holsters.

As popular as the Glock may be, I have to agree with this. I see Glocks in the big cities, Smiths in the smaller ones almost all the time.

Glock Claims to account for about 60-65% of the WORLD LEO Market.

i would say glock by regular cops, and the feds are normally using sigs.

Yeah i'm going to go glock. I thought for awhile that the FBI even carried Glock 23's... but i'm pretty sure the Secret Service carries sigs. and of course, Jack Bauer carries an HK:P

Last numbers I saw said Glock 22 in the USA, Glock 17 in the rest of the world.

I vote Glock as well.

I know there are a lot of SIG's and S&W's out there as well because I see them pretty frequently, but my guess is that the Glocks are cheaper for the departments (and, for that matter, individual officers) to buy and that maintenance is signifigantly easier, thus making them more attractive on a large scale.

I live in L.A. and am going through processing for the Police Department in Arizona and I can tell you resoundingly that I would bet my money on the Glock 22. That's what my hopefully, future place of employment carries. Many of my friends are police and sheriffs in L.A. and that's their duty weapon and everyone else's duty weapon that they know. The Glock is considered one of the most reliable weapon's on the planet, it is only suiting that everyone from local and state law enforcement to the U.S. Marshalls carry one. Those are facts.

Glocks, S&W, and SIG. Seen all three, and almost nothing but. Cheers.

I got this link from the AmBack forum. This guy has researched what LEOs have issued and are issuing now, and it's interesting (yes, GLOCKS do seem to predominate). The information is not complete (not every LEO is represented), and I can't vouch for its total accuracy, but I can say that all the departments that are listed which I knew in advance what they issued, this list has gotten correctly.

I would say the Glock 22/23 is probably the most issued gun in the United States.

As for the rest of the world Glock 17s, BHPs, and Berettas and clones of Berettas are probably much more common.

Probably Glocks (not a Glock fan here)

The 80 or so officers of the police force of my home town carry 1911 45acp's - cocked & locked.

I'll bet that more than a few local residents are unnerved and dismayed to see the 1911's hammer cocked back on the LEO's holstered sidearm and wondering if the officer is aware of the "dangerous" condition of his or her sidearm!

Mostly it's going to be a glock. Most federal agencies are switching or to who ever has current bid. Certain places specify. But lots of hk & glock going out now. Sig daks for others. Some local feds have switched to glocks from 9mm sig love the 40 sw. I only wish mine would upgrade. At least in caliber 9mm sub sonics not reassuring.

my local cops used to carry smith and wesson 457's but now they carry glocks of some kind.

The reason the Model 10 was so popular was the simplicity of the gun. Point gun and pull trigger. It makes it easy to train the joe average cop who knows nothing about guns. That is why the Glock has achieved so much popularity with departments, it doesn't take alot to run one.

It's why all the gun companies came out for the cops with Double Action Only (DAO) cause it's too hard and costly (ADs) to have a safety

Glocks are by far the most used sidearm by American police today and the model 22 seems to be the one favored at the moment.

i would say glock by regular cops, and the feds are normally using sigs.

Not quite. The FBI, DEA, and U.S. Marshal Service all carry Glocks (all .40S&W). The Secret Service does use Sigs (.357 SIG chambered model P229).

Glock 22 without question.

From what I have seen here in Az it is Glock except for the DPS/Highway patrol who use Sig 229s.

For those who are presently coppers on this board, you don't know how lucky you are to have those choices nowadays. Back when I started as an officer in 1977, they were still saying that all you could carry was a Smith & Wesson or Colt. Ruger had come out with the Security Six line, but most departments would not even let their officers consider carrying one (at least in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin - where I was looking to become an officer). The Illinois State Police were carrying the Smith & Wesson Model 39 9mm, but they were the exception and not the norm. I started with my own Smith & Wesson Model 27 3-1/2" barrel, was issued a Model 15 Smith & Wesson, and eventually got a Model 66.

As time went by I tried for law school and went to Oklahoma for that. Working with a suburban Oklahoma City department, the rule was not the gun, but the size of the gun. You were not considered a real man unless you carried a .41 Magnum, .44 Magnum or .45 Long Colt caliber gun. I was considered a wimp since all I had was .357 mags. :(

Yep, coppers today don't have to walk ten miles to school in blinding snowstorms and twenty miles back uphill all the way, and you got such choices in what you have that you are all spoiled little brats. :cuss: :neener:

(Sad thing is I am only 51 and there is no long beard smilie to put here)

The Doc is out now.

As far as numbers go there have to be a lot of smaller departments carrying something else to offset a department like NYPD with 40,000 plus officers. Although they have some options most of NYPD carries Glocks. I think the big factor is price.

IN Australia it's Glock 40S&W all the way with pockets of Model 10s which are still being used in some places (by Correctional officers in jails, eg).

#2 Sig 229

Working with various law enforcement entities on a daily basis, I can easily say without at doubt it is the Glock .40S&W line, namely the Glock 22. Glock 9mm's like the Glock 19 and Glock 17 are a close second.

Are we talking about the US market? No doubt Glock.

If we are talking about the entire world, I'd say an AK varient for rifle and some nonglock for pistol.
