Did some searching and I can't seem to find a good answer to this question.
I know that the smaller the number the larger the shot but apparently I didn't (don't) understand something else.

I thought that once you got into sizes like #4 you were automatically into buckshot, now I discover that BIRDshot goes from BBB down to #9 and BUCKshot goes from 000 down to #4.

So apparently you can have
#4 Buckshot where each shot is .24" (6mm) and has about 21 pellets
Or you can have
#4 Birdshot where each shot is .13" (3.30mm) and has about 135 pellets
:banghead:

Damn box of shells I just bought doesn't SAY which type it is so how am I supposed to know?

the box says
Remington Express "long range" 12 GA
2 3/4 length
1330 FPS
1 1/4oz shot
#4

Thanks.
I finally found the shells on Remington's site. So how do I tell what is what while I was in the store?

The Remingtons come in boxes of five like their slugs and say "#4 Buck."

Buckshot is marked all over the place. If it doesn't specify, it isn't buckshot.

Birdshot is measured in ounces, buckshot in pellets.

Birdshot runs from F to 12, at least (including non-lead shot), and includes some half sizes, such as 7.5 and 8.5. I think you have Buck right at 000 to 4.
