What's your favorite hog rifle?
351 WINCHESTER
April 9, 2007, 09:38 PM
I like hog hunting as you can hunt them all year long and there isn't a bag limit on private land. I prefer the .351 winchester self loader. It's powerful up to about 75 yards or so, quick follow up shots and penetrates like there is no tomorrow. She is a heavy carbine so if I run out of ammo I can always use her as a club too. From what I've read from numerous gun "experts" this caliber isn't suited for deer or similar game. They apparentely never shot anything with this caliber. Yea, ammo is a reloading process only, but you can load her hot or mild and she still functions every single time, unlike a gas operated rifle. When loaded to factory specs. she is pushing 45,000psi.
A good friend of mine gave me a lee enfield no 5 that had been sporterized. I had to install a lower front sight as she was shooting too low. My friend reloads for the .303 (thank God). I've had very good results with the ak bullets. Low recoil and high velocity. For hog's I will probably use a 180gr corelok. That lee enfield has the smoothest action of any bolt gun I've ever tried - bar none.
I've shot a lot of hog's with my .22mag lever winchester. That used to be my truck rifle. I used to carry my 1911 in .45acp as a backup and only had to use it once. I now carry my s & w 640 snubbie with fmj remington ammo.
The 1911 is just too heavy. I did kill one hog with the snubbie, but won't try that again. I can't run that fast anymore!!! That pig wasn't all that big, but for what he lacked in size he made up in meaness. I wasn't using enough gun that time.
Let's go pig hunting.

My three favorite hog rifles are;
In order
.375H&H M-70 Carbine
.358 Win pre 64 M-70 FWT
.470 NE double rifle.
After that it's
.45-70 Marlin 1895CB
.30-06 or .308
I know I know.I'm way over gunned with the big stuff but I've never seen a hog killed too dead yet.;)
Oh and by the way I got some "air" time on a 150 lber that decided to turn tail and run from the .470 one time. I gave her a Texas heart shot and she did one complete flip before skidding to halt DRT.:D

I have a Savage 110 in .270 that I bought to hunt my first pig with. Its a great gun, especially for the money.
I recently built an AR-15 in 6.8SPC that I will use next time and after I get the optics sighted in (hopefully soon).

If I have to run, (waddle) after the hogs - my Win. 94 30-30. Otherwise a 722 Rem in .358 Winchester - which, incidentally is the perfect black bear gun...

Although I've never carried a gun while hunting hogs, I would choose my Winchester 94 in .44 mag. It's trapper model (16inch barrel), so it is real quick.

I'll be going on my first hog hunt in the next 4 weeks. I bought a Remington 700 in 30-06 just for the hunt.

On our place we can get shots from 30 yds out to 500 yds or longer. We usually don't shoot over 500 yds and those shots aren't very often. I use a Tikka T3 in 300 WSM and have not had to shoot more than once at one hog.

I've seen the dropped by everything from .30-30 Win. to a .375 H&H. The fasted dropped hog I've seen was shot with a .270 Win.

I have two favorites for hogs (and both guns have taken deer too)
1. Winchester 94 Trapper in 44 Mag.
2. Winchester 94 in 38-55
In addition, my Colt Anaconda chambered for 45 Colt is a great sidearm for hogs.

Where do you get ammo. When I was a kid my uncle in Montana used a 351 for Deer, Bear, and Elk. He didn't read Barnes Cartridges of the World and had no problems killing game with a shot to the neck. A long shot to him is 50 yards. A highly underated gun and with ammo its gotta be a top SHTF gun.
Me I use a Winchester 30-30. Of course my longest shot has been maybe 100 paces.

Revolver 44mag 300gr flatnose hardcast
T/C Contender 7mmT/CU 120 gr ballistic tip
Rifle Rem Model 7 7mm-08 with 140 gr core-lokt
They all do the trick just fineJust came back from the Junco Ranch in Freer Texas and brought home a 140lb field dressed feral hog sow. It was a thrilling experience.

Whatever I happen to have with me when they come out:D :D
I have used just about everything I own to take them through the years but my go to rifle would be my, (or I should say my grandson's), Ruger Compact in .308, followed by my Redhawk in 41 mag. Either will effectivly dispatch them at most of the ranges I encounter them. With the rifle I have taken them out to 400yds and the RH has a couple under it's belt out to 100. I shoot the standard Rem. Core Locks 99% of the time from the .308 and from the RH I use the 200gr Rem. JHP at about 1500fps.
The grandson took his first hog last Nov. with the .308 and then promptly adopted it as "his" hunting rifle. After being beside him while he practiced and then making the shot, I have a hard time disagreeing with him.

Wish I had a favorite hog gun . . . wish there were hogs in WA State . . . given the opportunity, I guess I'd carry a Model 57 and/or Marlin 1894FG in .41 Rem Mag.

I really like my Ruger No. 3 in 45/70. Light & fast in the brush. It's soon gonna get semi-retired when I get my other #3 in .375 Winchester up and running.

I've used a 30-30, a 35 Remmie, and a 7.62x39 AR-15. I've used the 7.62x39 most, and I get all the penetration I need when loaded with Sierra 125gr bullets (designed for the 303 Brit/7.7 Japanee rounds and very tough).
Like aguyindallas, my next hog hunt will be with a 6.8SPC rifle, probably using Hornary 115gr HPs. I have a stock of Speer 130gr bullets that I use for my 270 and that work just fine thru the AR action; they're my backup plan for seriously big piggies.... :)

.338 or .300 win mag works well so will my .416 Remy. But all in all I like a my .270 especially for long shots. I have found that they really are not that hard to kill with a well placed shot. :D

I have killed more deer with a Marlin 30-30 than anything else.
My favorite though are my Marlin 1894 .44 Mag, and my M1A SOCOM. The EOTech sight on the SOCOM is great for low light hunting. I use a Federal Classic 150 grain soft point.

For hogs here in Texas, I tend to prefer handguns. Either a Redhawk in .44 magnum or an XP-100 center grip in .308 for longer shots are my preferences, though I've used .45 ACP, 9mm and .38 Super quite a bit also. When I feel the need to take a rifle, my favorite for the purpose is an SKS. It's a handy brush gun.

We hunt the golden triangle..... San Angelo, Abilene and Lampassas area.
No shortage of these 4 legged fire ants in this area.
We use just about anything that goes bang and has some power. My personal favorites are:
Marlin 30-30.... great for walking and follow-up shots.
Marlin .444...... if you want to see a 200 pound hog tumble from 70 yards, go
get one of these and use the Hornady Levereveolution ammo. I am hunting this weekend and I will try to video tape it.
I keep a 1911 on my hip just case. Good for Rattlers too!
Maybe for another topic.... but I think these pigs are getting smarter as we kill off the less adaptable and the ignorant. Darwin may be right.
Cheers!!!!

It is hard to beat a Marlin 1895 45-70 with just about any load. I also have Marlin 336RC Marauder in 35 Remington topped with a little Leupold 2.5X for crawling around in the rhododendron thickets in the East TN mountains for hogs. I would not feel undergunned even against the largest hogs with this hard hitting, accurate little rig.

I am looking for a hog hunting rifle. I found a used Herter's .264 with a custom stock. They wanted too much for it but it fit like a glove. By the way I am old enough and from the Herter's part of t he country to like Herter's. My serious question is: is a .264 big enough for approx. 100 yd blind shots. I know you can use anything but is this big enough for an aveage shot like me?

I have three, but only one is a rifle. Ruger Mini-30 with 123 or 125 gr SP, 12 ga with slugs and a Ruger KGP-161 in 357 mag (usually the back up).

utgopher, you asked:
My serious question is: is a .264 big enough for approx. 100 yd blind shots. I know you can use anything but is this big enough for an aveage shot like me? I'd have to say that's plenty of gun. I have killed hogs with a .243 at that range, and when I hunted the west Texas canyons and senderos I used a .25-06 for years. Range was between 80 and 200 yards; there were much longer shots but I wouldn't take them even though I'm sure that rifle is capable of killing with good placement well past 200 yards. BTW, I have "budget" optics on it - Simmons 3-9X.
I am hunting east Texas piney woods now, shots are 25-60 yards max. My hog/deer rifle is a Marlin 1895 .45-70, plain 405 grain lead loads. I have a Leupold 2-7X scope on it now that I am trying to change out to a big old moonscope - a 3-10X 56mm with lighted reticule. (I am going to post my tribulations with this project in the Gunsmith forum). The porkers have a tendency to come around my stand only in low light these days.

I use a 8mm mauser or SKS. My son uses a 30-06. They work great. The last hunt we were on the largest pig (275 lbs) was taken with one shot from a Marlin 30-30. No need for a cannon, as someone previously said any good deer gun will work fine.
We back up the rifles with a 357 (158 SP), 44 mag (GA 240 @1100), or 10mm (175 gr silver tip).

How does a .300 Savage in 150 grains sound for hogs?
I would use 180 grains but they dont feed well in my old savage 99.

is fine as wine bro. I use a No.4 barreled action with a synthetic stock and Remington 180gr psp. Gets about 2300 fps and out to about 150 yds its point and shoot. Hunter, gun and ammo are all very happy together.;)
