And how well did it work?

Old worn out cloth money bag from bank. Merely went into a bank and asked for an old worn out money bag, empty of course. They have plenty of them. Cloth is a little bit thicker than usually used for round ball patches. Soak it good with lube and it will slide into the barrel. Tight fit, good seal around ball for firing and cleans bore from previous fired ball. Don`t try seating the patched ball too hard or too fast. Go slow, or you could break your ramrod. Be sure patch is soaked well with lube and use a compressed fiberglass wood ramrod. These rods are usually longer than those that come with the rifle. Won`t interfere with shooting when repositioned under the barrel.

Gofer hide. Worked well, but a pain to process. Also tried real Chamois. Worked well, but not real advantage over the cloth on accuracy, but seemed to be better against burn through.

One of those fluffy weeds that look like a cotton mop (got mud in a barrel while hunting in Wyoming)...:scrutiny:

You mean a cattail? Maybe pussywillows would work okay too.
For shotguns, I've used various combinations of triple sized cotton balls and wadded newspaper over and under the shot load, with and without modern plastic shot wads. Everything worked fine, but some of the remnants smoldered a bit and some fibers floated around. But if hunting in dry woods starting a fire might be a concern.
Now I'm suddenly wondering if any of the powdery "food fillers" would make a decent buffer material for large loads of shot? It's just some food for thought I guess. :D
I bare balled a single shot pistol a few times, keeping the muzzle tilted upwards until it was fired off a rest. It shot accurately at 25 yards with only a little more barrel fouling.

Wasp nest as wadding in a ML shotgun ( minus the wasps of course!)
