different bolt on new 870s?

my buddy just recently bought an 870 and instead of the smooth, curved bolt that im used to seeing (and have on mine), it has a band cut out that is about 3/4" wide in the exposed portion of the bolt. does this serve any function, or is it some unnecessary design change?

I believe those bolts are only in the Super Mag (3 1/2") guns. Don't know if it serves any purpose.
