Is this gun legal to shoot IDPA with? I have 1911's which I understand are good for it, but thought this would be fun as well. No, I have not got off my butt and done it yet. This summer, for sure! Thanks. Anthony

Looks like a five inch. Is it? IDPA reduced the maximum revolver barrel length to 4.2" a while back. Really torqued off the guys, myself included, who had been shooting 5". Your local club probably won't care if you use it to get started but you could not enter it in a sanctioned match.

Thanks, yes it is 5" and I thought I had heard 4" was the max now. Oh well, I can shoot my 1911's and this will be a lot of fun just plinking. I wonder why they changed it? I assume 5" 1911's are still OK. Doesn't make sense to me.

I believe it's USPSA legal. Maybe there's a USPSA match near you?

If you're going to shoot both IPSC/USPSA and IDPA, trade it for a 4" (or 3.8", 3 7/8"). IDPA allows you to change barrels or have the barrel cut down and the sight remounted, but USPSA requires you to keep the factory barrel length! It's usually cheaper to trade than to have extensive gun work, anyway.
For IDPA, be very careful about maximum gun weight. The S&W model 410 10mm with unfluted cylinder is slightly heavier than models 525-x .45 ACP. Also, moon clips are only O.K. for ESR, so if you want to shoot SSR with the same .45 revolver, you will need slightly hard to find .45 Auto Rim ammo, or reload .45 Auto Rim. Basically .45 Auto Rim has the same case dimensions as .45 ACP but has a Rim where the moon clip would be. I think you might be able to use .45 Colt speed loaders and speed loader holders.

Starline is still making auto-rim brass.

I had not thought of using 45 Colt speedloaders with auto-rim brass... Now to get some more 185 hollow base bullets and load them down to a 135pf.

The rim on 45 autorim brass is thicker than 45LC IIRC. HKS speedloader #25 for 45LC and #25-M for 45 autorim.
