Where to find a cheap SxS to turn into SBS?

I have no practical reason for wanting to do this, but I'd love to have a side-by-side short barrel shotgun, with two triggers and exposed hammers, with a pistol grip and maybe an 8" barrel. Before you caution me against it, yeah, I know it will serve no practical purpose, it will be very painful to shoot, and it's nothing more than a novelty, but that's the whole point. That's why I don't want to spend any real money on it, because it's essentially worthless anyway. I could maybe go with a single shot, but I'd still want a hammer, although with a SxS I'd feel like I was getting twice as much for my $200. ;)

In any case, I've never been able to find anything cheap enough to spend the extra $200 on, and I definitely don't want to do this to a nice gun or any gun that could remotely be collectible. Does anybody know where to find a cheap SxS, preferrably with exposed hammers, that's not worth keeping as a long gun? Maybe something with a severly damaged stock, or a bent barrel or something that makes it pretty much junk. Or maybe a virgin receiver or kit gun that I can put together myself and register as an AOW, so that if I ever sell it the next guy will get a little break on the price of the stamp.

Any ideas? Again, I'm just looking for a novelty, something to play with, something to take to the range with the guys and say, "Here, try this." And serious bonus points if I can get it here with my C&R. ;)

Thanks for your help, and I hope I'm not wasting too much of your time with this. :D

Gun shows ??? Might be able to find one that's already been bubbafied for cheap before you do your extreme bubbafication. I'll be going to the Kane County Show here in Illinois this Sunday. If I see something I can send you the sellers info. Got a price range ????

Unfortunately gun shows are few and far between in my area, although I check them out whenever I get a chance. I stopped by a few pawn shops today, and one had an old 16ga for $300, another had a brand new generic 20ga for $225, neither of which were all that appealing, although they seemed reasonable for guns with exposed hammers. Ideally, I'm hoping to find a 12ga for under $200 if I can, or at least somewhere in that area. I don't see a point in spending much more than that, and I'm not really in a hurry. I found a used single shot for $75, so that's something to think about too I guess.

Thanks for the offer to look around for me scout26, if you happen to see anything that might fit the bill, I'd appreciate it.

Don't kill anybody named Clanton!
I think a Norinco would be a good bet for the price you described. For hand-pain reasons, one in .410 makes sense.
I think Centerfire Systms has them.

Just to make sure;

$200 ~ more or less
SxS 12 ga.
Hammers (if possible)

I'll let you know what I see and send you any/all info if I see anything that fits what you want.

Old hammer guns are almost all damascus barrels.

They're either worth too much monetarily and sentimentally to do that, or they're not worth the tax stamp (and they can explode pretty easily, too).

I've seen Chinese-made brand new hammer guns (coach gun style) for $300 at Big 5 Sporting Goods. I don't know if they still have them, but this was within the last few months. They're probably not well-regulated, but with an 8" barrel, you'll hit whatever you're shooting at anyway. At least they probably won't explode.

Wow, for that kind of money you'd think they could at least have built them as AOW's instead of SBS's. They do look nice though.

And after looking around, I'm starting to think hammers might not be the best idea. Most of the guns I've seen chopped don't have them, and I've heard stories of the hammers doing damage to some peoples hands if they don't have a good grip on it. But I guess I'll see what comes up.

In any case, thanks for all the help so far, I'm really looking forward to this. :D

I must admit I've been interested in doing something similar as well, as long as it's legal. I had the opportunity to shoot one of these things when I was younger and it was very cool. I'd love to have one to take to the range.

It looks like you're in PA? According to the NFA FAQ (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/wbardwel/public/nfalist/nfa_faq.txt), short-barreled shotguns are legal there. :D

A shotgun with a barrel length of 8" is illegal in all states unless you have a class 3 licence

I think you need to do some more research on this one, jhog1. No offense. ;)

Well, no joy at the Kane County show. I only saw one SxS gun with hammers. An old Damacus barreled Parker for $1200. Only saw about 8 other SxS shotguns, none with hammers and all NIB or close to NIB Stoeger Uplanders, Remington Spartans and a Stevens 311. All asking $400+

Thanks for looking at the gun show, I appreciate it. I'll have to go to the next show in my area and see what they've got. The last one wasn't promising.

As for pawn shops, I've been to almost every one in my area. The one in town doesn't sell guns, the closest one that does is in a small town about a half hour away. There are more if I drive a little further, but not in the same direction as that one. So I do look at pawn shops, but they don't have a huge inventory of old SxS's. The one that has the most guns is full of Mosin's, SKS's, bolt action 22's, a few pump and auto shotguns, and enough Hi-Point and Llama pistols that I could spend probably spend a years salary and not have them all. I stop in every once in a while though.

I'm sure I'll just happen on it one of these days, when I least expect it. Probably when I'm in a hurry and forgot my checkbook too, but I'm sure it'll happen one of these days.

Thanks again for all the help. :)

How do you make a shotgun like this legally? I know there's a procedure for it.

Short answer, get a Form 1 from the ATF, fill it out, have your Chief of Police sign it, get your photo and fingerprints taken, and send all that stuff and $200 to the ATF. Wait a few months for them to do their background check, get your approval and stamp in the mail, then you can work on the gun, or have it worked on by a gunsmith.

It's not a difficult process, but it's a long wait and moderately expensive. And then you have to deal with all the rules concerning NFA weapons, like telling them when you're moving, getting permission to take it across state lines, etc.

All in all, it's a small price to pay for so much fun. :D

Learn before you post. There is no such thing as a class 3 license.

This meets your criteria, but it is a 20ga. I'm not sure if you can get it in 12 or not.

Norinco SXS Dual triggers, and exposed hammers.
