Chicago gun registration

Hello.
I am wondering if anyone out there has ever appealed a denial of a Chicgao firearms registration application. I recently moved to the city, and in an effort to comply with the law, submitted an application to register my Remington 870.
I was notified today that the application was denied. The reason: "Weapon considered an Assault Weapon"
I am, of course, appalled. But what is most important to me is to preserve my right to keep this firearm. The municipal code provides for an appeal procedure, which I intend to initiate on Monday. I am wondering if anyone has done this in the past and has any advice on the procedure (i.e. what type of evidence I might want to present, what arguments may prove persuasive, etc.)
As a side note, since this is my first post, I should thank you all for providing such a wonderful resource here on the web. I've just gotten over to TFL and begun mining its archives. Great stuff!

Hi, Bix, welcome to THR.:)
Former inmate of Chicago. All the guns I brought to Chicago for my 3 year sentence were illegal there, thus I did not register them.

The Rem 870... an assault weapon??? It's pump action, for god's sake! ****, this is what we have to look forward to in Kali, no doubt. Can't wait to leave... Can't wait to leave...

The Remmy 870, an "assault weapon"? That's... that's just obscene!
Just to get some more details on the table, how is your 870 configured: which 870 model, what gauge, what kind of stock, what barrel length, what mag capacity, what kind of sights, etc?
Perhaps with this info, one of the IL gunnies can determine if it's actually an "assault weapon" or not, and if not, reference something in the law which you can print out and (politely) ram up the nose of whoever's denying you.
One other word of advice: since you've already gone on the record as owning what they consider a scary baby-killing weapon, you may want to store it off-site or out of the city/state, until you get this cleared up. Chicago's been making hay lately of going around seizing "illegal" guns (when they're not busy ripping up airfields), and I sure wouldn't want to be on the CAGE unit's radar.
Best,

Bix, welcome to the forum!
My sympathy to you on your recent relocation.
Can't help you with the Daley-ville lunacy but I hope you have your FOID card (firearm owners identification card). There was a backlog of over 15K applications a couple months ago.
Surely, your 870 is plugged for 3 rounds and used for "downstate" rabbit hunting???
Good luck and keep us posted.

Do you have any idea how they define "assault weapon?" It can't be the same as the feds. The bill Daley tried to push through for the state defined any rifle over .50 cal as an assault weapon and banned them. The ISRA and the NRA said that would include hunting shotguns because their slugs are larger than .50. Most of us thought they were just desperate to get the duck hunters and Bambi blasters to join the crusade, but. . . . . :uhoh:

There are 3 current "ugly gun" bans in effect in Chicago.
1) Federal
2)Cook County
3)Chicago
The ugly gun ban that Bix is refering to was proposed by Mayor Daley :barf: ( The same Mayor Daley who at one point ordered his police officers NOT to charge people who where carrying illeaglly just "get the guns off the street" which lead to the police confiscating the guns of gangbangers and letting the gangbanger go free :what: )
in the state legislature in Springfield.
Thanks to the lobbying efforts if failed. :D
Yes, they were desperate to get the hunters/farmers/muzzleloaders on board ( i.e. the rest of the state except Chicago ). But the bill contained contradictory language at one point specifying that shotguns were excuded from the ban and at another point it specified that ALL firearms with a muzzle diameter greater than .50 inches were banned.
When I was in Springfeld visiting my legislatures there was a meeting to brief us on how to do it and we were told not to point out the internal contradictions in the bill to the legislature.
