Chet, what load are you shooting?

If its 3" buckshot, you cant hardly make any more recoil than that, unless you shoot 3 1/2" buckshot.

Try a light skeet or dove load through it.

Do you know how to read the numbers on a load?

3 drams equiv=how much powder is in it
1 1/8oz=how much shot is in it
7 1/2=the size of the shot.

Less powder and less shot will give less recoil.

Also, if your gun is light, its going to recoil more than a heavier gun. There's less gun to absorb the recoil, so you have to absorb more.

A proper mount will reduce felt recoil. Search for Dave McC's excellent post on that.

And there are lots of reaoil pads out there. Most any gun shop with have slip-ons for $10 or so. For a little more, you can get a Pachmyer Decelerator, which has a better reputation.

i have shot several other shot guns before but never have they felt like this..it mite be because of the real short barrel..

The guys give good advice, let me add a bit....

Good technique makes a great difference, work on your form. Besides what's posted, see the thread on handling heavier loads.

Since some perceived recoil is the blast, use BOTH plugs and muffs when shooting that short barreled scattergun. A double with a given barrel length runs 3-6" shorter than a repeater with the same length barrel. All else equal, shorter barrels seem to give more muzzle rise. That adds to the perception of kick.

3 1/4 DE is still a stuffish load, go for a 1 oz, 2 3/4 DE for about 20%(SWEG) less kick.

Both Pachmyer and Uncle Mike's make a good slip on pad. Make sure these do not lengthen the stock past what you can handle easily.

HTH....

I was firing my Ghetto shotgun* today, it's a SxS 20 Ga. that has an 18" barrel, and it didn't hurt at all. As a matter of fact, it kicked less than my 12 Ga. Remmy. My friend fired both barrels at a time, and it didn't kick so bad.

*Note- My Ghetto shotgun is a nameless side-by-side Brazilian import from FIE. It has an 18 inch barrel and the butt was cut off to just the legal limit. To make it suitable for skeet shooting, I duct taped a stock extension and foam butt pad to it. It shoots easier and better than my Remington 1100 special skeet model. Weird.
