Today marked my first time diving into reloading for the .30-06 in this great old bolt gun. To say that my range timewas exciting would be an understatement. Not really having any experience with this caliber, I turned to what I have learned from reading this forum and what I have learned with my .260.

First off, good bullets. Chosen make is the 168gr Nosler HPBT (I don't believe that they are J4 jacketed). Then I selected Hodgdon H4350 powder because I had it on hand from my .260. All of this was loaded into surplus Lake City brass, circa 1969 vintage and ignited by a Winchester Large Rifle primer.

Results? WOW!! At a powder charge level of 56 grains the Springfield delivered a 1.6", 5 shot group at 100 yards! :what: And this is a completely as-issue rifle, only modifications so far have been to remove all grease and as much cosmoline as possible.

Sorry, just figured I'd share my fun with everybody. What a day!

Nice. 03's are inherently extremely accurate. Try working up a load with IMR 4064. It should be even better. My 03A4 will put 3 rounds into a dime at 100 if I do my part. Mind you, 1.6" is nothing to sneeze at.

My father always got around one MOA from his Springfield sporters, using 150-grain Hornady spire Points and 4895. I've always gotten around one MOA or better with Sierra bullets and 4064.

Good shooting! I have a as new 1903A1, and as has been said here; if you do your part the rifle will do the rest... Nice job on the reloads, you got what you were trying for. Ah, the smell of gun powder smoke on a saturday morning -- Summer fun and days to remember.

So many guns, so little time!
