NJ: How Bad Is It?

I am considering a job opportunity in Summit, NJ and am naturally concerned about moving to such an anti-gun state. I currently live in Virginia, have a CHP, shoot revolvers and semi-automatics at least once every two weeks, and like to reload. I don't have any plans to acquire additional handguns. I know that CCW would be out, but what other aspects of NJ's gun laws would make me do a slow burn? Please limit your reply to 2000 words or less!

NJ is about as bad as it gets when it comes to the ownership of firearms!

Let's put it this way......the very first time I asked for the paperwork for a FOID card, I was asked 'what do YOU need a gun for?'. No, it wasn't a requirement, but it pretty much fits the mindset of what you will deal with.
BTW - If you decide to do it, the MOMENT you do, contact the police/municpal office where you are going to live, and get the FOID paperwork and get started. It'll take anywhere from 1-6 months to process, and while you are a resident of New Jersey even TOUCHING a firearm without one is a crime...much less purchasing one. You'd also do well to check the assault weapons law (check through at njguns.com) and see if any of your firearms are on the list (ours is worse than the fed level AWB). Then, grab a copy of Nappen II (the Big Bad Burly Book of NJ Weapons LAw) and learn it.
Let's see...what else...waiting periods on all purchases....$15.00 charge for the NICS check....oh, good thing you reload. Shipping ammo in NJ IIRC is a no-no.

Too bad... Summit's far enough from the border of Free Pennsylvania that the commute would kill you before the BGs would.
There are places in PRNJ where you can live that are better than others. For instance, South Brunswick issues FIDs and pistol permits in a matter of days and without undue communism.
Also, Ray Woodrow III and his famous TFL shoots are here! :)

Consider very carefully. Consider it as if you were considering a job opportunity in a different country.

Thanks, everyone. I turned down the job offer because I couldn't bring myself to voluntarily live in the state.

I hope that you told them that that was why you turned it down. Living there they probably don't see it (unless they are gun owners). But to have someone from outside their area tell them that is the reason for not taking a job, it might make them at least think about the way things are run there.

And here's the man who possesses the exact leadership that we urgently need:

Greg:
I agree, the reasons for declining the job most definately _should_ be stated, because that completes a feedback loop.
My guess, however, is that most of the time, the reason would be met with confusion, as in "you're not taking the job because of GUNS? :what: well, I'm glad, I'd hate for you to go postal on us."

At the risk of oversimplifying, here's the taxonomy of NJ critters:
Beleaguered gunowners: (like me). We recognize the importance of RKBA, and also the fact that the right of self defense exists wherever we stand. The state has actively jerked our chain, a chain that should exist, and we don't like it one bit.
Complacent gunowners: occassional shooters and hunters who have no problem with the current set of laws, because they aren't likely to have an impact on their bolt action deer guns.
The rabid leftist gun grabbers: Well, we know what they look like, no need to redo that here.
The unaware, in 2 flavors. I think these are the bulk of the citizenry. What they have in common is that they are only tangentially aware of the issues, but aren't deeply committed to either side. Generally, they believe that NJ's "reasonable gun laws" are in fact "reasonable".
The unaware, flavor A: They haven't really thought about it much, and abstractly support the 2nd Amendment. Since the rubber has never met the road, (ie, they've never tried to buy a gun) they just don't realize how big a deal it is. They believe that they can lay hands on a gun when needed, and have no idea just how wrong they are.
The unaware, flavor B: These folks haven't really thought about it much, and are predisposed to the notion that guns are bad, and only bad or suspect people would want them. They are inundated with MMM propaganda, and accept it uncritically, to a certain degree.
----------------------------------------------------
My hypothesis is that if the unaware folks really thought about it, the majority of them would line up behind us.

New Jersey is bad.
How bad is it?
It's so bad that Rosie O'Donnel won't move there because it would be too difficult for her bodyguard to get a handgun to protect her.
It's so bad that Diane Feinstein cannot show off a rifle with a detachable magazine and conspicious pistol grip to scare the sheeple into voting with her.
It's so bad that only criminals and cops can carry handguns leaving innocent citizens to coward and plead for their life from either criminals or the police.
If you're considering a job in New Jersey, then you should also consider a job in the People's Republic of China or some other similar place.
