I know, you need a shotgun or 45/70...I dont have one
right now.
I have a snubbie 357 revolver, and a glock 22 that I
am comfortable with.
I plan to let the GF carry the snubby/I will carry the g22
any one have any good Ideas?Thank you very much!
oh yeah,what about for security?
I am an armed security & my company has a policy against
fed hi shok

Frankly, I'd look at 180 grain FMJ. IMHO, most of the JHP loads will open too fast. One could make a good argument for 180 gold Dots too. The edge should do a better job of turning a grazing skull wound into a penetrating one. I don't have the penetration depth of the Gold Dots at hand, but if they'll exceed 14 inches or so, I'd probably use them.

I can't remember the last black bear or cougar w/in the city limits of San Fransisco  so I doubt they'd be an issue where you work ;) That said, I'd recommend getting a larger caliber if you & your GF plan on venturing out where you might come across'em :D
As far has home security goes, I'd go 12 ga. pump shotgun.

I spend most of my time out in the woods up here in bear&cougar country and while I have seen many, they are have never been a problem. I do carry a Taurus ti .357 snub on my hip or in the fishing vest. I always have my dog out there with me which helps.
Just take some 125g soft points for the .357..................leave the Glock at home and enjoy the woods!

I'd go for penetration in those circumstances, so a heavy FMJ (180-200 gr.) would be best.
Although in San Francisco, I'd be more worried about the "pink rattlesnakes" (i.r. Bill Engvall)...

Borrow a decent gun for hiking and hunting.

I'd go for a heavy 180 load as has already been mentioned.

Gold Dots are good. Pro-load, Texas ammo and Corbon offer some hard hitting ammunition for the .40. I don't care for 180 grain bullets in a Glock .40. I'd prefer something in the 155 - 165 gr range. If I were hunting bear, I would go for something a little bigger (to humanely kill the animal), but for defense a .40 will suffice.

This is a great plan for annoying or torturing the aforementioned animals. Why not just go kick a bear in the nuts instead? Or better yet, rethink where you're going.

no need to rethink, just be 'bear-aware'................ 10s of 1000s of folks go into bear/cougar country unarmed this way every season with no problems

some were funny...I guessed I should have added that
I would be going camping this summer.
the .357 is for the GF to use at close range.
My G22 with the hi caps would be used to scare the critter.(and shoot it if need be)
last year there was a mountain lion in Marin that killed a lama,
and there was a black bear killed on H'way 280 25 mins
south of Frisco a few weeks ago.
If you want official confirmation Portola state park in San Mateo has
lookout for cougar signs everywhere...they also say NO FIREARMS!
I wish they would tell the Lions "no claws " so
when I go camping (there) I can not be seen walking /hiking with a long arm...when I go up to the National Forest later this summer I
hope to have a 45/70 :D
I've never even seen a bear or a mountain lion in the woods
so I'm not worried too much...2 legged predators are far more deadly

Almost anything will work on a cougar, they're pretty thin skinned. I've never run into a bear but have cougars.
If you think you might run into a bear, I'd rather have the heavy 180's than an abbreviated 357 which'd be just a 38+P out of the short barrel. Better yet a 44 Mag. New gun time!;) :D
