My wife and I are heading down to Port Canaveral for a cruise this week. We are driving from SC. I have my SC CWP, and a NH Non-resident to cover me for GA. However, my Florida CWP application is sitting in the office..... so.... my question is:

Can I travel into Fla. with a pistol in my vehicle? I'm not going to take it on the ship, but want it while traveling and staying in the hotel? Does anyone know about restrictions while in a truck?

Thanks in advance,
Jack

This was Copied from Packing Dot Org (http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/florida)

Car/Gun law summary
Date updated: Tuesday, October 30, 2001

It is not necessary to have a license or permit to carry a loaded firearm in a private vehicle, so long as the gun is "securely encased". Florida law defines a weapon as being securely encased if the firearm is in a glove compartment, whether or not locked, in a snapped holster (not worn on your body!), in a zippered gun case or in a box or other container that requires a lid or cover to be lifted or opened in order to gain access to the firearm. These restrictions do not apply to any person who holds a valid Florida Concealed Weapon License or a reciprocal state license/permit.

I routinely travel to Florida, and do exactly as Ringer has pointed out. That won't work in some states though, as well as some cities.

Illinois, where I exist, has basically the same law, but you have to have the handgun in a case, unloaded, and of course you have to have a valid FOID. Can't drive to Chicago though!

I just wish to heck we could get a Federal CCW that uncomplicates all these stupid state laws, but I know that will never happen.

Packing.org is a good source for knowing the laws of various states.

As stated above "encased" you'll be fine.
re:Fed CCW...no thank you.Something issued may be recinded.

Better to shred ALL gun laws and adhere to "right to keep and bear arms". My attn, efforts and focus anyway.

Until such time I have "issued" from various places, stay w/i such -or-as my safety dictates.

Contact your State to allow reciprocity with Florida so the next time you wont have to go through this. Florida's law says if your State will take ours, Florida will take yours!

South Caroliina wants the other state to have an equal training program. I haven't followed the exact problems, but these folks are in the front of the issue.
