Immediate defense

What are you armed with right now! - Not under the bed, in the closet, in the safe, the nightstand drawer or in the car. What can you lay your hand on right now to defend yourself and your loved ones?

If you have some sort of weapon at all times do you think that is that paranoid?

If you don't do you think that is ok?

My answer:
My .38spl (at least) is always with me (everywhere).

I'm not looking for a personal evalution. Just interested in seeing the level of readiness that most members maintain.

Got home from court 200 miles away, late - uh, made later by a detour thru the huge Cabela's on 35W in MN!

So I slipped my carry piece (S&W 637 Airweight) onto the bookshelf behind me, alongside my G26 in a Fobus paddle, that is my "outdoor" pistol of the moment. Both 3 feet from my right hand. Put my feet up by the fireplace.

Several feet from my left hand are my fireplace display of a Scottish baskethilt broadsword, Targe, pattern welded dirk and sgian dbhu, an old Mauser bayonet, a damascus hunting knife.

And the early alert system provided by my 2 young Labradors.

Oh - and a grumpy 20 pound Maine Coon tom. :what:

everywhere except for the shower because I do not have a water proof gun... now if I just could find out where to get one of those nifty 5 shot H&K underwater guns... then yeah I would be armed everywhere in my home.

Are you really paranoid because you know that evil strikes at any time and you want to at least go down with a good fight. You may not live, but nobody ever said the bad guy shouldn't lose too.

At home, I keep my XD45 within reach, and the .30-30 and a shotgun within a few strides. I don't worry about home nearly as much as I do elsewhere, but Arkansas requires that you jump through hoops and give up your privacy, while begging on your knees, minus a handful of cash, before they'll allow you to defend yourself... within certain limits, of course.

I don't see the streets in Vermont or Alaska running in blood. Odd, that.

velojym... I live in AR as well and carry one those nifty blue cards.

I cannot say that any of my privacy has been compromised nor did have to jump through hoops. In fact I had to get a statement from the Fayetteville city court regarding a misdemeaner bcause my lawyer did such a fine job of getting my records sealed that even the State Police non criminal investigations (the nice lady who checks you out before you get approved) couldn't get to them. I do not consider that a hoop to jump through, but it did cost me half an hour... oh, well.

The initial cost is a bit high (total of $224) but renewing will only be $80 total. Twenty dollars per year for four more years isn't bad. Big plus is skipping that phone call to .gov everytime you go to buy a gun. Fill out form 4473, present money,ID, and blue card. Pay and be on your merry way.

Granted that my 2A beliefs are offended by having to have the card and its limitations, at least we have that option as a shall issue item. So many folks wish they could have that. Be grateful for what we have.

SIG P245 is my watching TV gun. Going into the local shop to pick up a P3AT tomorrow so I have something with me at all times, home or elsewhere. Normally have a G23 with me "most times", and a 1911 by the bed. I take a FEG 9HP with me when traveling by airplane (effective 9mm but cheap enough I won't cry if it is "lost")

Paranoid? No. I enjoy guns so it is like having some of my collection near at hand. Also, while the chance of a home or personal attack is slim, I would rather have and not need then need and not have.

I just got out of bed a little while ago, and since I'm off work today I haven't bothered to change out of sweats, but my Colt Commander is hanging, cocked and locked, on it's gunbelt, about 3' from me, on a hook on the back of the closet door.

My wife's Glock 19 (She's still sleeping), loaded of course, is in her carry purse, about two steps from me in the other direction.

I'm in DC right now. Other than my pithy tongue and sharp wit, I have a good sized general use Folding knife on me and two cell phones. My office is in a strip mall that my company has leased. We have solid front doors with keys that we have to use anytime we want to get inside. We also have an off-duty Police Officer monitoring our parking lot to ensure that nothing "walks off" like what happened to a co-worker of mine (4 wheels stolen from car in under 10 minutes). We have a lot of police activity near us, and we sometimes have several officers stopping by to say hello to their buddies working for us here.

When I am at the Navy Yard, we have armed guards and the Homeland Security GSA Cop HQ building co-located with the Navy security. Not that these guys are effective, but there is little to no crime on the Navy Yard.

At work I have a light, knife, OC and cell phone, with my Sig P229 secured in my car in the parking lot. I also have a roll of duct tape, and plenty of things that could be improvised in my cube. The devices I work with make good cover.

Not at work I have my Sig, 3 magazines, OC, knife and cell phone.

At home my wife and I both have bedside guns in GunVaults, and I have a Mossberg 590 with plenty of 00 buck within 7 feet of the bed, I also have two German Shepherds.

When you need a weapon you tend to REALLY need it so I try to keep them as close as I can.

Hopefully my employer will reconsider their CCW policy after recent events.

If someone comes near the house, they are not pleased, and very demonstrative about it. I've had to put plexi-glass inside the windows to keep one from going through it. Little ones about so I have a couple of those cheap touch combination pistol safes here at the house one of which is in the file drawer of the desk I'm sitting at with a CZ SP01 and a S&W 629 in it. Figure I can get it open and have one of those in my hand in very few seconds.

We have some acreage and I have a beam sensor across the turn off into our driveway which is about 700 feet long. Sounds a beep and has a red light when it's tripped, but that's in the bedroom so not really useful, but was a cool project back in my gadget days.

Mossberg 590 loaded with 8 rounds of 00 Buck in bedroom closet; not chambered

None are visible unless you know where they are.

...and I'm NOT a gun nut nor crazy-paranoid survivalist - I just like these tools. I don't really expect a guy bursting in my door in the next 5 seconds.

whoops gotta go

PS - JAD - the Mossberg A1 is a sweet shotgun but if you have any financial constraints save the hassle and shipping charges that will put you close to or over $500 and just go pick up a regular 590 ($350 at any Dick's, often on sale for $320). The heavier barrel of the A1 is no joke although 18" > 20". No one ever really breaks the plastic trigger guard/safety and the standard 590 barrel is pretty strong and protected by a heat shield.

I do however usually get fully dressed for any outside activity and that means wearing a weapon. Only when I must venture to the courthouse or hospital do I leave the home unarmed.

At the comp desk I have a G26. Living room coffee table Kimber eclipse Custom II. Double Star MForgery in the kitchen. Mossburg 500 in the bed room. and 9 foot spear in the hall :)

2 notes

1. no kids in the house, no guest who are not gun people. If someone is bringing kids over the place gets "sanitized".

2. not really paranoid, I just love fighting tools. Not just guns but knives, swords (I have several all of which are functional), spears, axes, etc. If was made to fight with on a person to person level I have at least some interest in it. The reason weapons are all over the house, I love to fondle my babies. :)

Considering I just got out of bed an hour ago, and havent gotten dressed yet, I dont have any weapons "on" me. Other than a bunch of boogers like mentioned above. lol
But on the desk in front of me is a Benchmade Griptillian, Buck 110, Leatherman original, new CRKT Triumph NECK, S&W folder, and another small cheap folder, along with plenty of crap I could throw, magazines, books, quarters, pens, and some shotgun shells and a new camera.(dont really wanna throw that, but it is a Titanium one that will supposedly take more abuse)
XD9 is on the floor beside the bed almost in arms reach, Rem597 17HMR in arms reach(POS, not the best defense gun), 11-87 behind door loaded with 5 3" 00. Oh yeah, theres a Colt 1911 in here too.

I have two different guns that, if I'm not at work, are on me until I go to bed.

Today it's a Ruger GP100 with a 3" Barrel and fixed sights, yesterday it was a S&W 45 ACP Revolver with fixed sights and a 4" Barrel. At work I have to carry the "bottomfeeder" they issue me. 90% of the time I also carry a BUG off duty. The BUG is a S&W 442. I also carry at least one reload for each gun, today it's two and a partial reload in a Speed Strip.

The Speed Strip holds 5 rounds of 38 Special ammo for my BUG, but my GP100 will shoot 38 Special too. Before I leave the house to run errands I will go get the 442 out of the safe and put it on my ankle. Take care and stay safe.

Galco Ankle Glove.

I'm about to replace it as the Galco is starting to wear out after ten years. The ten years I've used it would equate to about three years of hard daily carry. I usually carry in my pocket.

Wow, this thread has been going for some time now, as we lost our German Shepherd to Cancer some 4 months ago..

And, right now, as I type in our home office, I'm looking at my Sig P220 45 laying just under the desk on top of the PC tower..

No gun, IMO, is a better substitute for frontline HD/SD as a German Shepherd and our world is a lot less without him, or one.

I keep an SP101 next to the bed in a safe with quick access, but nothing on my person. The house has a security system and is small, so getting to it or the main gun safe is no problem. I'm in a very rural area with no neighbors in sight. The motion detectors around the house tell me if anyone/anything is close. The deer and raccoons occasionally keep me up at night!

Funny you should ask. Just had a truck load of strangers stop twice in front of my house. I was in the garage working and found it interesting they were pointing at the only house on the corner..mine. I was not packing but did stuff a utility razor in my back pocket before peering out of the garage...they took off before I broke the threshold. No I did not plan to confront them but wanted something in case they had already started to come up the driveway and I needed time to get indoors.

An 1851 Colt Navy replica cap 'n ball(in .44), and a Mosin-Nagant M44, loaded with the lighter East German training rounds.

Far from ideal, but it's what I have. Normally I'd also list a good door/doorframe and deadbolt, since you won't find many folks capable of kicking one in. Can't list it now, as it appears mine did it's job. Looks like someone attempted that very thing recently, and failed. Since I'm in an apt right now, going to have to wait for it to get fixed(not long though).
Probably the drunk from across the hall. Wouldn't be the first time he's tried to force entry thinking it was his place and his roommate locked him out. Still, not happy about this.
