I was with that article right up till this point:

To win elections, Democrats need to reason with gun owners rather than insult them."

There is, perhaps, no better example of the way this message has been embraced by the Democratic Party than the 2004 presidential campaign of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. As Bennett notes, the Kerry campaign wanted voters to see photos of the senator, an accomplished marksman, in action with a hunting rifle. And when Kerry came back to the Senate in March of 2004 to vote on the assault weapons ban, he was on message, using the standard AGS formulation that combines language about rights with language about responsibilities.

:scrutiny:

Also they were flat out wrong earlier about magazine restrictions and a weakened Brady Bill.

Time to watch out for this "Americans for Gun Safety" group, because the second amendment is not "a balance between gun rights and gun responsibilities" as they call it, it is an absolute right. Responsibility is certainly an issue, but is not intrinsically tied to a human right.

Man those guys are so lost they don't even know which way is up if they thought Kerry's approach was successful with gunowners. The AGS mouthpiece seems to think that wearing plaid and an orange ballcap while holding a shotgun is a sure cure for a lifetime of anti-gun votes.

Did he not miss the NRA's "That dog won't hunt" ad? From a political perspective, AGS pitched the NRA a softball and they knocked it out of the park. Kerry lost by an even larger margin than Gore (despite Bush's negatives) and once again, key states were areas with strong gun rights movements (Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania).

Has Kerry even shot a rifle since vietnam?

Gun control has become the beaten zone of politics. Supporting gun control, excecpt in certain local elections with a leftist electorate will attract a large volume of fire and seriously jeopardize one's candidacy. Incoming fire always has the right of way, even in politics.

For similar reasons, social security reform is a deadly topic to breach, except to assure the elderly that their pensions are safe.

You think Kerry filed his rifle in Vietnam?
I'd say they might have forced him to in basic, that was probably it.

That's about the dumbest political analysis piece I've ever seen.

The reason gun control is a losing issue is because pro-gun people have a longer memory than anits. If a politician votes for gun control, it doesn't mean a whole lot for the typical anti, but it sticks in the craw of the pro-gun voter.

when Kerry came back to the Senate in March of 2004 to vote on the assault weapons ban, he was on message, using the standard AGS formulation that combines language about rights with language about responsibilities.

Illogical rhetoric. Responsibility is not banning something so the common man can't have it.

Sure he did. According to Kerry himself, he jumped off his boat, ran into a hut, shot a wounded Viet Cong, and brought an RPG out as a souvenir.

One of his purple hearts was also apparently due to his firing a grenade launcher into a nearby bank on a lark, and get scratched by flying debris.

To my knowledge Kerry does not belong to any gun club in Mass.the shot gun he was given in penn could not be taken to Mass unless he had a class A license to own(It was auto loader)He does not have a Mass license.he does not know the law[hes a lawyer]

They are as hard at gun contol as they ever have been ... but now they have to create fake "sportsmans's" associations in order to give themselves "pro gun" endorsements .... they are sneakier now, skulking in the shadows backstabbing every pro-2A effort ...

My search for "pro gun democrats" has been like others' search for the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot ... we have a ton of unconfirmed sightings but when we have the apparatus to document such a creature ... well ... where are they? All that is left is shadow and myth ... but still my search continues.

To win elections, Democrats need to reason with gun owners rather than insult them.

Translation; to win elections, Democrats need to lie to gun owners rather than fight them ... then they can stab gun owners in the back when they get into power.

This may be a simplistic way of looking at things but here it goes...

If I cannot count on a candidate sworn to hold true to the second amendment to the constitution, then why in the world would I think he would hold any regard for any of the rest of it?

The constitution was written in plain language so that the common man could understand it in the first place as was the bill of rights afterwards. The polilitical correctness BS of the system trying to "interpret" the writings has watered down the written word until none of it is as plain as intended. I see a revolution within the next 50 years or so. I am afraid it won't be pretty.
