Firearms are not completely illegal in France or, for that matter, any European country I know of. Luxembourg probably has the tightest laws, and Great Britain is now quite tight, but firearms are fairly widely owned in France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, and Austria. They do have lots of registration and controls on the types of firearms owned in most of those countries, but the initial statement is quite untrue.
