Waht is THE .30 calibre to go for? It is for hunting (deer / boar) not target shooting. The main standards I have contemplated are .30-06 and .308. I am more inclined towards the .30-06 as a shooter (and reloader) of .25-06. What other good suggestions would you give in the general .30 / 7mm ranges?

Either of your first choices are top of the line. .300 Win Mag is also fine as are any of 100 other calibers. Hit 'em in the right place with the '06 or '08 and you OWN them.

The '06 has a small advantage with really heavy bullets (not needed for deer IMHO) while the '08 has a small advantage in recoil and cost of reloading. It also fits in a short action if that is your cup of tea.

Good luck-enjoy.

I've always been a fan of the .280 Remington. I have one of Remington's Mountain rifles in that cartridge with a 24" barrel and it's a tack driver. Never had a chance to shoot an elk with it, but it has taken lots of mule deer and hogs.
Of the .308 and .30-06, I'd go for the .308 unless you really need to load 200 grain bullets for something.
