Okay, it's not a weapon per-se, but I have an opportunity to pick up a 1'st generation Yukon Advanced Optics NVMT Night Vision unit for $140.

I see it listed for $180 at Dicks sporting goods and the like.

Anyone know anything about this unit and if I should even bother with it?

What're you gonna use it for? Generally you probably want 3rd Gen stuff, though good 2nd Gen is good too.

Just for watching nocturnal animals when I'm out backpacking. I used to have a camcorder I'd use but it died of old age and I don't really want to buy another.

My understanding of Gen1 stuff is that it works fine if you've got an IR light source to use to light things up. Beyond that I'm useless (so, basically, I'm useless on this question). I'd still say get something newer, but the cheapest PVS-7's I could find (Alphas, not Bravos) was around $1,000. Makes this look cheap, even if it's less capable.

ZeSpectre,

Here's what I use:

True, it's a bit expensive for "just" nature study, but the best value for the buck, if you might need it for serious social difficulties. I have two, and will probably get a third, just for the same reason... As "insurance" goes, it's pretty cheap. Gen 2+, for good Gen 1 price...

Hrmm, I think I may wait until I can afford a Gen 2 device. Funny, I really wasn't thinking about "social unrest" situations at all when I first started getting the itch to buy one of these...now y'all got me thinking again (dangerous, very dangerous <grin>)
