Ok,
So I got my NIB S&W 625 (1990 Vintage so No KEYLOCK!! WooooHoooo). Anyway, turns out it's a 5" tube and I need a 4" for IDPA. I've found a couple smiths. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with any of these guys?

1. Scott Mulkerin of SDM fabricating. So far he's "in the lead" with his IDPA package. He shortens the barrel. Installs Weigand front sight base and SDM "super sights" front. Trigger job (Wolff springs), chamfer cylinder, number holes. He does this for $260.

2. Vic Tibbets

3. Cylinder and Slide (but they seem really pricy )

4. Alan Tanaka

5. Charlie Prest of RPM

6. Frank Glenn

Anyone here deal with any of these guys? Anyone you would (or wouldn't) recommend?

Help me here....

Rich

As far as I am concerned, being in the business, Cylinder and Slide has one of the best reps in the Country..

Have you looked into maybe getting a 4" tube for the gun, rather than shortening the existing one?

Trumpet: I have a 4 inch barrel that I took off one one my 625's. Its for sale @$50. It has a new bore, but has been high polished with all markings removed. You would need to have it bead blasted to match your gun and the front sight blade from your barrel pinned in.

So it may or may not be a do-it-yourself job. Or you could call your smith and supply the barrel, but I don't know if you'll actually save much money.

I've known Frank for nearly 40 years. He did some work on my issue guns and one Python. Results were always good. I don't know about his turn-around time or prices, but the "grumpy old bugger" has a good reputation,

Alan has done a lot of revolver work for me on my S&W and Ruger revolvers. His turnaround is about 2 months and prices about the same as everyone else. Last time I was in his shop he had a 625 he was modifying just along your lines. I have had a number of gunsmiths work on my Smiths over the years and Alan's action jobs are as smooth as anyone's or better and usually a lot lighter than others (still reliably fires, though).

Where is Charlie Prest these days? Some time back he was at All Custom Firearms in Arizona but is not there now.

Dunno exackly where you're located, but Shannon Jennings @ Randy's Guns and Knives in Knoxville does all my pistol werk.

I've been in and out of the biz for over a decade now, and he's the most all-around talented 'smith I've ever seen. I've met guys who are better with 1911's/benchrest rifles/revolvers/whatever, but as far as someone who can cure anything short of a rainy day when it comes to any kind of gun, he's the bee's knees in my book.

He's worked on my rifles, 1911's, Glocks, HK's, and done the action jobs on some 10 of my 20-something S&W revolvers. He made my cheesy MIM-parts 296 with a rough star and overlong hand feel as good as my five-screw M&P. The man is just gifted.

Ask for Shannon.

Expensive, yes, and there's a waiting list, too—but the quality is very good.

I've had most of my revolver work done at Clark Custom Guns (http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/). Highly recommended.
