Hello fellow members,
I have bought a Sar 1 AK had a few problems, sent it back and then finally got one that shoots straight and is a keeper.

Now I want to do a few things to it.

Has anyone out there added muzzle brakes to these guns if so, who did you deal with and how much?

If you have done it yourself where did you buy the product and whats the best one out there?

A few of us in the Portland, OR area had breaks installed on our SAR-1s. We used the slant break style and had a machinist drill out the threads. We heated up the break pounded it on and then put a tack weld on the bottom. All in all it turned out pretty good. If you can find the people to help you could do it yourself. I'll post a picture maybe tomarrow if your interested.

Here is what I did. I got a 14x1 LH threading kit from Dyna Systems (http://www.dynasystems-ltd.com/GunFile/Products.html) . Then I got my brake from RPB USA (http://www.rpbusa.com/ak.html) for $14.95 (also got by buttstock from them). I threaded my muzzle then permanantly attatched it by silver soldering it on.

I installed the -74 brake on my Hungarian Ak. It is noticeably effective at reducing muzzle rise and increasing noise reflected back towards the shooter. The pin on style can be had for <20 bucks and is reasonably easy to install.

My next plan is to install the slant brake. This decision is being done mostly for looks, as I've gotten tired of that hunk of steel on the end of the barrel. But also for a little authenticity and some decrease in muzzle rise over a bare barrel. For this install I will have the barrel threaded, brake installed correctly and tack welded in place. A friend of mine had his sar1 refinished parkerized and a slant brake installed there for around $130. After the park job and refinishing the wood his sar1 looks almost as nice as my sa85m, but not quite.

Had mine installed by AK-USA....they threaded the barrel, installed a thread adapter, and silver soldered the brake on. Not all 74 brakes are created equal.....theirs is an exact copy of the real Russian brake. Works great.
