Hey guys, I'm new to the forums, been lurking for a while, but only just started posting. I was just wondering about what your guys backgrounds are...

It seems that a lot of you guys are cops, etc.... just wondering if there is anyone else like me -- I'm in my mid-twenties, not a LEO, never shot a gun growing up other then a BB gun, or black powder while I was in boy scouts, and my dad isn't into guns at all. In fact, I just bought my first gun in Jan. simply because I've just always wanted to get into it. I mostly just target practice and bought for home security, but I am thinking about possibly getting a CCW even though I doubt I will carry all the time.

Share if you want to, if not, I won't be offended, just wondering...

Here's a little list to make it easy... this would be mine:

LEO: no
Age: mid-twenties
Years of gun experience: <1
Gun education: self taught
CCW: not yet

if you have any other info to add, feel free. thanks gentleman, I'm enjoying the forums very much. talk to you soon.

Ex-LEO, no arrests (well, 2 birddog arrests), but thousands of convictions.:D Now a professional basher of LEOs.

Gun education: my mother, she taught me what "NO!" means. At the knee of my father while he cleaned his guns at his work bench. At the side and in front of my greatgrandfathers, grandfathers, great uncles and uncles.

Over 500 formal hours of instruction including LFI, Chapman Academy, Thunder Ranch, Gunsite, Pat Rogers, Louis Awerbuck, Chuck Taylor, Ken Hackathorn, etc.

Have held a LTCH ("CCW") since I was 18. Started carrying on my uncle's farm at 13. Now licensed to carry in several states.

Pedigree: LOL

First I'll give you my background:

Marine,
CCW PERMIT for 3 years (Note the difference)
Gunsite, Tactical Response, Iraq, Former Practical pistol shooter.
24years old
Got my first 1911 at 15... started shooting ~ 10.

Now, The better shooters are NOT cops/Military, because excepting a few nuts like me it's just a job...
I've had my @$$ KICKED in a rifle match by a farmer from Texas who had never been LEO or Military.

Because it's NOT a job to a civillian, it's a passion.
-Now those LEO or military for who it IS a passion... we are at a distinct advantage.

I was brought home from being born, placed into my dresser drawer crib and my Maternal Grandma put MY revolver with holster in that crib with me.

LEO: no, had them along with Military folks for Mentors
Age: Just turned 52 a few days ago
Years of gun experience: Age 3 shot My revolver, Age 6 shot my first 1911
Gun education: How raised- What you do
CCW: Before the state even had pieces paper, and again how raised what you do.
I started apprenticing when I was 13 years old, CCW was a Model 10 snubby.

Sixth grade, only broke 2 targets on my first round of skeet. In the 7th, ran my first 200 straight.
Vietnam War going on while in HS, and I wanted to help raise money for a guy we all knew, and did come back whole. Jimi Hendrix had just died.
Some say some of my Mentors were bootleggers and hustlers...
All I know is for 5 days I shot 200 targets and did not miss a one.
I gave this guy my part of the shoot $1000.00 in cold hard cash.
I was shooting for $1 a bird until I missed. I missed bird 1019.
I needed the $19 for a sick sibling [Mentors made me keep that $19].

I am nobody, never was, never wanted to be, still don't want to be.
I just happened to have been invited to join THR is all.

Years of gun experience: almost 50
Gun Education: family, friends, self and a hunter education class at age 9
CCW: yes

The first time I remember shooting a gun was at age 5 and my dad had me kneel on a chair resting a single shot 410 over the back of the chair. It knocked me off the chair on my butt and that is how I learned to appreciate recoil. We had rifles and shotguns laying around the house all the years that I was growing up and I don't remember anybody ever doing anything stupid with one, we just knew better. I didn't get into handguns until I was almost 30.

When I was a boy, my great uncle gave me a Winchester .22 pump
rifle passed to him that was manufactured in 1910. My father
gave me a .410 shotgun for Christmas when I was ten.

Used both while hunting with my grandfather. Still have them.

I got my CCW when I realized how many people relied on me.
I started a business nearly twenty years ago that would have
died if I died. When employees show up with family photos
on their desk, car loans and mortgages, I saw that more families than
my own depended on my well being.

I practice with a police department trainer several times a year,
converging on once a month now that most of my duties at the
company have finally been delegated.

I'm 54 (and a Leo by the way.)
LEO. Nope, but have passed the Virginia Armed Security Guard qualification course a long time ago. Have worked part time as both armed, and unarmed security a couple of times. Also passed the Virginia CHP course. (Basically an NRA safety course.)

Gun Education: Mostly self taught. I got my first gun, a single shot 20ga, when I was about 13. "Gun education" was "Don't shoot yourself, or anybody else." Got a little instruction I suppose from my grandfather and uncle. I guess most of my "education" came from guys named O'Conner, Keith, Carmichael, Skelton, Cooper, Melick and a lot of others who's names escape me right now, who wrote for Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Guns & Ammo, Shooting Times and so on.

CCW: Yes for a couple of years now. That's about the time I discovered "Gun Boards." :D
