Any LEO Actually Carry a DE?

Folks, channel-surfing this weekend, I don't know how many bad TV shows and movies I saw where people were running around with IMI Desert Eagles.

Does anyone know of an LE Agency that has ever authorized the DE in .44 mag or .50AE for carry? Anyone know of an LEO that ever carried a DE on duty?

Sounds like a great idea in an ankle holster...:D It's probably the BUG for the .50 cal mounted on the cruiser.

I knew an armed security guard who carried a 44mag version.

Did he also duct tape a ceramic plate to his back? :scrutiny: :scrutiny: :scrutiny:

No but this guy was actually in the USMC reserves too! He was a pretty decent fellow actually. Another guard I knew carried a Super Redhawk! Ended up getting a 9x19 Beretta 92 brigadier as his emplyer frowned on the 44mag.

Pure Hollyweird. No cop would actually pack such a monstrosity. The TV and movie idiots latch onto whatever gun they think is cool and that's all you see in films until the next cool gun catches their attention.

No but I carry a 460 Weatherby Magnum for my patrol rifle and an 8 guage shotgun as well.;)

My Dept does not list them as an authorized Off Duty sidearm. Single action, huge size, uncertain caliber, (how far does a 50AE overpenetrate?), nah, not good. Get a sling, scope, and use it for hunting.Or anti-vehicle pistol, maybe?

I know a cop who carrys a howitzer as a duty weapon. He loads it with birdshot....not the pellets, actual birds who were shot.

the desert eagle isn't a practical weapon for a carry pistol in 50 AE. My opinion... neither is a .50 BMG a good idea as a police sniper rifle.

I think most major SWAT teams probably have one in their arsenal. They're great as anti-material weapons which is what they were made for.

What about the .50 GI? It comes in a 1911 size platform I believe.

As far as I'm concerned, if a 6" N-frame .357, .41 or .44 Magnum is still a viable candidate for LE use (as some on this forum have said), then what's wrong with a Desert Eagle in those calibers?

Personally I am along the lines of thinking of the 1911/Glock/Sig platform for most cops, but it seems silly to ridicule all Desert Eagles based on the .50 AE variant while at the same time pining for the "glory days" of the LE wheelgun.

I don't know any LEOs that carry a Desert Ego, and I do not know of any departments that authorize the carry of one for duty or backup. It is just too effing big :).

well here in ca the cops aren't allowed to use high capacity magazines so small los angeles county cities who can't afford buying dual 1911s for their cops issue custom deagles with a side-folding bayonet mounted on right side of a tri-rail mounted to the foward picatinny rail. i believe the light on the left is a surefire e2d that shares batter power with the crimson trace grip. the only problem we've had with this duty rig is that our officers keep getting plumber butt and everytime they tell the kids "say no to crack" people gun uncontrollable fits of the giggles.

"...what's wrong with a Desert Eagle in those calibers..." The biggest reason, aside from the MSRP, is the 3.875 POUNDS it weighs.

It's semi-automatic.

back in 97--98 that worked for a 4 man dept that qualified with and carried a DE 50. He was a big ole boy, needless to say. Finally chunked it and went with a Sig 220 45 after the WOW factor wore off.

+1 - funniest thing I read all day.

I can't imagine carrying one of those on duty. Your follow-up shots would take forever, although, if you hit them the first time you shouldn't need a follow-up shot.
