What's your "Quigley"?

I only word it like that because of my father. After seeing "Quigley down under" my dad had to have one of those Shilo Sharps rifles. It was the end all-be all for him. Well, it took over three years and over $2500 but he finally got it. Complete with his initials on the side just like Matthew Quigley's in the movie. It's a really excellent piece of work and I would love to have one.

However, my "Quigley" is the H&K Mark 23 Socom pistol. I want one so bad I can taste it. When I acquire one I will feel like my dad does now.

So, out with it, what's your "Quigley" and why?

After seeing "Quigley down under" my dad had to have one of those Shilo Sharps rifles. . . . he finally got it . . . And can he put his shots in a 2" or 3" circle at 900 yards like Quigley . . . shooting offhand? ;)

Seriously, here in the real world, what kind of accuracy are these rifles capable of?

300 Weatherby Mag with a Nightforce 5.5 to 20 x56 scope. I get 1.75 inch group at 200 yards and 2.5 at 300 yards. "Had" to have it for Elk Hunting in Montana. Nailed my elk at 396 yards as it was moving up the side of a small Mountain. Used my backpack and a rock as a steady rest and a laser range finder for the distance. It's still my Quigley! Can't wait unitl I can try it at 600 yards or more:)

My Pedersoli Sharps'll do that at 100 yards...off shooting sticks. It might do better with a betterer shooter with sharper eyes.

Back to the original question...my current Quigley is a S&W 696 revolver. I love the .44 special round and the size of this package. Passed on one last December and I've been sorry ever since. Oh well, I don't have the cash to buy one now anyway.:banghead:

HankB: Sad to say it will never be shot. As long as he owns it anyway!;)

He bought another Shilo Sharps 45-70 and 45-110 during the wait and shoots them! He made a cabinet to hold the Quigley and a gun belt and sheath like the ones in the movie. That's where it stays.

When I get my Mk23, on the other hand, it will be a shooter!

At 900 yards, a good shooter with a good load and mucho practice can ring a buffalo silhouette on a regular basis...a life-sized buff silhouette. No three-inch groups on newspaper classifieds...

Well, my quigley was the M1a...after years of dreaming and scheming, she's mine (and when I die, my son's and his son's).

Now Quigley takes the shape of a really fine bolt-ation rifle. Something you would take to Africa -make that Alaska. Don't know what it'll be exactly- something in a big caliber, able to really reach out there.....and tip over big animals .

Must have? An authentic scope Whitworth rifle from the Civil War. There have been others during the time (notably the 40-50 lb target rifles carried by some sharpshooters of Co. E or I of the First U.S. Sharpshooters or the two companies of Andrew Sharpshooters) but none were ever as portable as the Whitworth.

lendringser,

At 900 yards, a good shooter with a good load and mucho practice can ring a buffalo silhouette on a regular basis...a life-sized buff silhouette. No three-inch groups on newspaper classifieds... Beg to differ (sorta). An 1874 Sharps with black powder can easily hold MOA (or a hair over) out to 1000 yards. Of course that’s no three inches at 900 yards, but its a lot better than several feet at 900. The guys winning the BPCR matches are all shooting pretty much MOA. That includes off hand shooting and of course all shots are with the open vernier style sights.

First one is a Winchester 1886 in 50-110. I've wanted one for over 20 years. In all that time I've only seen one for sale.

S/A M1A, iron sights on humanoid targets out to 600 yds, with my eyes, no problem.

If I need to take the 900 line I'll add the Arms mounted ranging scope that tells the distance and where the hold on is at any range out to 1000 meters.

To have the one I would really like one day would have to be the Barrett .50 in 10 rd semi config. Now we are talking a mile and a half with the right scope.

I think people are taking the theard question too literly (sp). It doesn't have to be a long range rifle, just a gun that you always wanted and will get someday.

Mine is a H&K MP5 and/or a H&K P7. I will own one or both of these someday but not until I have more "toy money".

If I ever saw someone consistently holding MOA shooting offhand - with iron sights! - I'd be suitably impressed. I can't do it. I can’t even come close to doing it. My understanding is that is what they do though. I know they only shoot offhand at the closer distances and to be completely honest I’m not all that sure if they are shooting MOA when doing that or not. I do that at the longer distances (several 100 yards and up) they are shooting any way they want (rested obviously) and they definitely shoot MOA when doing that. My point was just that MOA is easily possible on a Sharps with iron sights.

Sharps are fine, but My taste in single shot rifles run to the ballard action. A nice scoped one in .22LR and a centerfire chamberd for 38-55 and equipped with midrange tang sights would keep the Trapdoor and the Martinis in good company.

It was a Remington Sendero in .270 Winchester, but I used my college graduation money a couple weeks ago to buy it. All it needs now is a decent scope on it, has a 10x 3200 mildot Bushnell on it at present.

So I guess I have to choose another, i'd say a really nice engraved Safari Browning BAR I saw at a gunshow in .338winmag. I drooled all over my shoes.
