got some a pair of swivel mount and swivels free and im trying to get them on my 10/22.

what's the easiest way to get it on there? I tried to take a screwdriver and pound it in to make an opening then screw it on but that doesnt seem to work.

I dont want to damage it anymore, whats the proper way to do this? thanks

How about drilling a pilot hole for the screw. That would keep the wood from splitting also.

Drill a 7/32" hole 1/8" deep, followed by a 5/32" hole 1/2" deep. Debur the opening and thread in the screw.

Agree with Arkie. However, I think the front one attaches to
the barrel band if you have the correct sling swivels.:)

Use a drill, for the rear screw, that has the same diameter as the screw does - without the threads.
It'll also help, to drill the top 1/8" of the hole as large as the screw's shoulder, to avoid crushing the wood. Lube the screw threads, the first time, with a little mushy bar soap.

If you have the correct front swivel, mentioned above - it'll have a flat ear above the swivel eye that fits into the lower part of the barel band & is held by the band screw.
The insides of the barrel band, where the band screw crosses, might have to be thinned slightly with a file, for the band to fit the stock tightly after the swvel is installed - YMMV.
