savage model 111 30-06

I have a chance to buy a model 111 savage in 30-06. I checked the gun out and the action is nice and the wood stock is in good condition. There is no rust and the bore seems fine. It comes with a scope but I will probably replace that. Does 175 seems like a fair price? the gun is proably 20 or more years old but not abused and not used too much it seems.

I know very little about gun values, but I can tell you I own a 111 in 30.06 and it has been servicable. It's a little heavy, but still kicks like a mule. Also, I've had a recurring problem with the box magazine falling out on firing. I have taken a few deer with it though so it serves its purpose. I got it as a gift, so I don't know what it cost.

I'll take it for $175

Great deal at 175 if it's in serviceable condition, if taken care of guns last a lot longer than that.

It's a pretty good deal. I've got a 111 myself, also in .30-06 but it's a newer gun with the synthetic stock.

The only problem I've had is the magazines doesn't always feed. Sometimes the rounds get stuck and don't pop up to the bolt, so you go to take your second shot and the chamber is empty.

I'd like to design a magazine that works, but I don't really know how to make a magazine, so...

I picked up the gun today and the gentlemen told me that the gun was probably built in the 60's or 70's. The stock comes with what looks like a indian head penny in it that says savage arms. Do they still do that with their wood stocks?

I'll post some pics when I get it cleaned up.

Does anyone know if the coin that was in the stock in pic #2 is still done by savage? is there any significance to it? special model or stock or something?

Yes, you are on the receiving end of a "great deal" IMO. I still have a 110c from around 1980 in 22-250. I had an '06 also, but foolishly traded it. The 111 models were the high end Savage rifles, and also highlly underrated at that time. I have not seen a beauty like that one, and I am always checking. With that hard butt pad, you may want to put a pad on your shoulder when you sight it in. Of course, when I shot my '06 back in those days, I did not let on that recoil bothered me. I got smarter in at least one area lol. Old 112
