I was a little apprehensive about buying an XD-40 because I'd never shot .40 S&W and had heard so much about "snappy" recoil. I ended up going for it anyway, because of the flexibility offered by conversion barrels and because I really liked the way it fit my hand. I bought the gun yesterday and took it to the range for the first time after work today.

I started out at 10 yards and will admit that my first target was not great. I had to make some adjustments to my grip and get used to the sights. The second target was better and I'll let the third speak for itself. All shots were off hand. I do not use bench rests with handguns. I think that kind of defeats the purpose. The boxed area of the target is about six inches wide.

After shooting through 4 targets, I decided to move in to 7 yards. One thing I should mention is that I shot a mixture of MagTech, Remington UMC and Blazer Brass 180gr FMJ. The MagTech was noticeably less consistent. I liked the Remington the best, but the Blazer was almost as good. Here are my results.

I really like this gun. The ergonomics are fantastic, the balance is good, the recoil is very manageable. I'm looking forward to spending more time working out the kinds in my shooting this weekend. At this point, I'm still more accurate with the Bersa .380, but I have well over 1000 rounds through that gun and am extremely familiar with it. I am sure I will be outshooting it with the more accurate XD before too long. I have zero regrets about this purchase.

I've got the 9mm 4" Xd, it's great, but feels like a toy.
A friend has the .45acp 4" XD, it's also great.

Oh how I wish the XD fit my hand! No matter how I hold one, it just doesn't feel nice and comfy like the S&W M&P's or the Taurus 24/7's. Great gun, but I wish they would change the cheese-grater stippling/ribbing with nice, soft/sticky rubber, then I would buy.
