View Full Version : Slower Burning Powder in 22 Mag Ammo?

On another forum I read where there is no performance advantage in 22 Mag ammo versus 22LR in pistols because of the slower burning powder in 22 Mag ammo. The 22 Mag cartridge is designed for rifles and the bullet has already exited the barrel before a good percentage of the powder has burned.
Do you experts agree with this?

Not true.

There's still quite a difference.

Out of my 6.5" Single Six revolver (with both 22lr and 22mag cylinders):

22LR will do ~950-1000 fps with 40 grain solids
22MAG will do ~1300-1400 fps with 40 grain HPs.

Thus, even out of a short barrel, 22 magnum is going faster than 22LR will out of a long rifle.

Of course, the mag will benefit from the longer barrel more than the LR due to its slower powders. There are usually a good bit of unburned grains contributing to muzzle flash with the magnum.

I am sure the powder in mag's is a tad slower burning but - altho I have not tested it - I have heard mention that a .22 mag even out of a NAA mini, approximates a rifle .22LR velocity.

Out of my Mini - certainly the mag rounds still have enough energy to deeply penetrate some solid wood.

Interesting. When winchester first brought the .22mag it was loaded to an honest 2,000 fps. Now it's down to 1910 fps with winchester, with cci the lowest at 1875 fps. You can get rws for over $20. a box that run over 2,000 fps. I have a whole of winchester dynapoint 45grain that they advertise at 1450 fps. All I know for sure the .22mag. is a very potent killer on game out to about 75 yards or so. It will kill farther to be sure. I've killed many a wild hog with this round. Never found it lacking, but I didn't shoot every hog that I saw either. In the fmj it's certainally got the penetration.
