Hey there fellow THRers. I was just surfing the net a little and came across this ammo that I've never seen before. If its not as new I think it is, you guys can hold back the "wow!"s and "cool!"s and just tell me what you think of them. If they are new, I'll be expecting the "wow!"s and "cool!"s :)
TACTICAL® EFMJ
EFMJ brings a new standard to bullet expansion technology.
Federal’s exclusive EFMJ bullet design provides the most consistent expansion and reduced risk of collateral damage. This one-of-a-kind bullet design combines a scored full-metal nose over an internal rubber tip that collapses on impact—not based on hydraulics. Its fully enclosed design means it never fills with barrier material and ensures controlled expansion directly upon impact. A low-flash propellant is ideal for low-light tactical applications, while EFMJ’s bullet profile promotes smooth feeding in automatics. It’s the perfect choice for reliable expansion and penetration—not to mention for agencies that don’t permit hollow point ammunition.

Seems like a good solution to HPs failing due to getting clogged. What do you think?

Several months ago when I first read about them , I thought it seem like a good ideal.

I got a box of them just to try out. They feed and fire just like fmj, I can't say what the expansion was like, I fired them in an indoor range, but they are fairly accurate too. Probably a good idea for people wanting HP type performance, but have reliability issues, or those in NJ that cannot buy HP's

Do they look like FMJ?

It has been out for several years. Federal moved it from their Premium line of ammo to the LE restricted line.

Yes they do look like FMJ.

I was using the .45ACP EFMJ what I thought was around 5 years or so ago.
They fed fine but it's not like I was getting feed issues with JHPs anyway. The "jurisdictions where hollow points are prohibited" angle was there but the stuff wasn't "LE" or "tactical" in any way.
I guess it makes sense to move it into the LE section - should generate a great deal more interest than when it wasn't quite so Tactical. Should make the basis of a great marketing thesis. Personally I'd be curious how many have been avoiding the stuff for years that will suddenly want it now that it's all ninja.

Actually it and the HST both were restricted sale to LE from day one. They just recently started putting things in the Tactical line.
Follow this link to my store and you can down load the LE catolog. There is a picture of the EFMJ ammo.

Yep, bought some this past Tuesday for my 9mm, and 40cal.
Just in case, the JHP comes to issue somehow, someday.

They have been around for many many years.
Please do a search.
Performance testing has shown that they do not expand as consistently as hi-quality HP bullets.
They are valid to consider for these applications:
1. Handguns that do not cycle HPs reliably;
2. Civilians living in states where HPs are illegal; and
3. Police Agencies which do not allow HPs for carry.

I'll defer to your expertise on the matter, but isn't LE restricted usually marked in some fashion?
This pic (from ammoman) is how the local stuff looked and it isn't distinguised from any other Federal premium that was turning up locally.

Nevertheless, I'd remain curious if we want it more now that we can't have it. I shot a box or two way back and never felt compelled to buy any more.

They did not mark either on until they put them in the Tactical box. I have no idea why they did not mark them from the beginning.

Thanks for all the info people. Seems like it would be handy to have a box around in case I were traveling through areas where HPs are illegal. Its a shame that stuff like that gets limited to LE use only. Pretty stupid in my opinion. Thanks again for your help.:)

From an earlier post I did:
"I did the trigger spring mod to mine as well as the rest of the fluff and buff, and it made the trigger much nicer. Not light, but easier and smoother, which makes the still slightly heavy pull less noticeable. As far as ammo, I shot a bunch of the WWB for practice, some of the PD Hydrashok for familiarity, and carried the PD HS for a year or so (shooting a little bit of it now and then for reassurance). About a year ago I read about the Federal EFMJ, and wanted to try some of it. I called all around, and the only place I could find it (or anyone else that had heard of it) was at Midway shooters Supply. I ordered 4 20 rnd boxes, shot 2 1/2 of them to prove reliability, and that is what I carry now. It is peppy, but does not feel like +P, and in fact is a little easier to shoot than the PD HS loads (probably because of bullet weight (105 gr. I believe). They shot through some 3/4" plywood we set up and still burried 5-6" in soft dirt backstop. The recovered bullets (I can't find the pics I took (actually, I can't remember what I named them)) , but they all looked just like the pics in the advertisement. You can check here, http://www.thegunzone.com/efmj.html or just search Federal EFMJ, and lots of info will come up."

Curiosity got the better of me and I checked Federal's site - they still have EFMJ in the "Premium" section. The bullet weights differ from those in the LE section and I didn't see +P in the "civilian" 9mm and .45ACP.
Wouldn't be enough of a distinction to dissaude me from getting "civvie" EFMJ if I wanted some. I don't, so this is pretty much an academic exercise but presumably good news for friend SniperStraz.
On a tangential note, does anyone know offhand if those places that prohibit hollow point but allow EFMJ would allow Cor-Bon Pow'RBall?
