Hey there all,

Quick question. How can you (if it can be done) take a live primer out of a shell?

Load the primmed only case in it's gun and fire. Or, just decap it in the resizing die, slowly... and keep you face turned away.

isn't that really bad for the rifle since the primers are so corrosive?...so i've heard

You can either fire it off without powder, or just run it through the decapping die again. Wear safety glasses and run it up into the die slowly. If you're really concerned about it going off, then you can wrap a heavy towel around the press while you decap it.

boobap,

It's no more of a concern than firing a regular round through the same firearm. Corrosive primers were generally abandoned in the early 1950's in the U. S. Some countries have used them much later, though mostly with Berdan primers.

Hope this helps.

"...since the primers are so corrosive..." Not all primers are corrosive. Primers sold for reloading are not.

Boobap;

Or, just squirt a little WD-40 into the brass rendering the primer inert, & decap normally. Trying to save one lousy primer is not worth all the SHTF factor in the household should it go off.

WD-40, water, any oil or other liquid will not render a primer inert. If you do pour something down the case it can and will still go off. Just run the case through the resizing/decapping die and be done with it. I decapped 50 9mmX19 cases last night because I found a fault with the cases. I didn't even try to be gentle. None of the went "bang". I recommend that you be gentle though. I was trying to see if you could set one off...

I have decapped many live primers over the years with no incidents. Reused them, naturally. :)

I would not reuse a punched out primer,not if it meant my life or losing a shot at game..03 cents j ust isn't worth the chance.
I'd toss it in the gun box with all my other screw ups and shoot it at the range though.why waste .03 cents?? :)
