I trust the moderators will leave this in "General," which is the most-read portion of the THR site and this matter is of extreme importance.

A new Colorado law may affect you since it will infinge on your right to carry in Colorado. Do you hunt, ski, fish, vacation, or visit here?

SB 34, which is on our Governor Ritter's desk says that non-resident carry permits will no longer be honored in Colorado if the permit holder is not a resident of the state that issued the permit.

Please go to this thread to look over the situation:

Add your voice to the clamor for Governor Ritter to veto this bill.

Thank you!

First let me say that I believe that carrying should be a universal right.

That said: the fact is that universal carry is not law. The various states can and do restrict it and IMO they have the constitutional authority do so as guaranteed by the 10th Amendment.

Thus it is wholly within the purview of the CO legislature to not recognize the permits of citizens with non-resident CCW's issued by states they don't even live in. In fact I agree with this.

Too bad for those that don't live in states that don't issue carry permits. Elect representatives that will provide for it or move if you want one that bad.

The only legitimate reason for having a non-resident permit IMO would be for those people that travel to states a lot that issue non-resident permits. In other words if you travel a lot to Florida - for example - and you live in say WA and FL doesn't have reciprocity with WA then getting a non-resident FL permit would make sense. Otherwise...

It also affects all those CO residents who had FL or UT, etc, permits, but not CO permits-- for whatever reason (cost, registration, bang-for-buck, etc).

ETA: this law will also prevent people from carrying in CO who have a permit from a non-res state (UT, FL, etc) but who live in a state that has no CCW (CA, WI, etc).
