Burglary attempt foiled by alert house sitter

A would-be burglar escaped injury early Monday when a house sitter fired a round at an intruder who had entered through a broken balcony door, according to a police report.

The house sitter, Taharqa I. Givens, 24, of North Charleston, told officers he noticed the door leading to an upstairs balcony of the Purcell Drive apartment was broken about 11:30 p.m. but didn't call police because he didn't know whether anything had been taken, according to a police report.

Givens called police about three hours later when he saw light shining into the bedroom from the balcony.

Givens grabbed a .45-caliber Ruger, told the intruder to stop, and fired a round when the man attempted to escape.

The man hopped over the balcony and took off on foot, according to the report.
