I don’t talk about it much, but I work at a mid-sized university in California, and my unit is peripherally involved with safety and security issues. This week, I submitted a restructuring proposal that included support for on-campus concealed carry by faculty and staff. I’m sure it will go absolutely nowhere, but hopefully I won’t be asked for my resignation. :D

As a part-time student at ODU in Virginia, and as a CCW holder, I carry on campus all the time. You need to allow for trained and experienced students to be part of the solution.
I applaud you, sir!

What type of support are you asking for?
CA doesn't prohibit CCW on any school property unless a local school district makes a policy decision to that effect.

At least you tried.

Exactly. In light of Virginia Tech, I couldn’t ignore the possibility in good conscience. It was just one small part of a much larger proposal, the timing of which was otherwise coincidental.

Jojosdad, what I proposed was campus sponsorship for CCW permits. California isn’t a shall-issue state, and even in “conservative” counties permits are never guaranteed and may exclude schools. However, I see no reason why the university police chief couldn’t issue permits to qualified volunteers.

In any case, this is still a “liberal” campus where political-science faculty can boldly claim that the Second Amendment describes no individual right to arms, so I expect little if any traction.
