I am looking for a sound suppressor for my RRA sbr. Can anybody explain the qulaity difference between a $250 can and a $1000 can. They have the same noise reduction. Does it have to do with durability? Thanks!

Durability, servicability, and I would assume acutal noise reduction all reflect on the price.

The cheaper cans will probably not last as long and will probably not be able to be dissassembled for cleaning.

You pay for the name on AAC, Gem Tech, SWR, AWC...but those companies have such loyal customers. I like what Gem Tech offers and I will stick with them for my suppressors.

Silencer talk discusses all of the suppressors on their site.

Typically the big difference between a $1000 can and a $400 can that have similar durability and sound reduction is size and weight. The cheaper can will be 1-3" longer and weigh 5-8oz more. The other big difference comes in attachment method - a cheaper can is usually just a muzzle mount can that uses the same threads as the flash hider. The more expensive cans will have quick-detach or proprietary mounting systems.

That can be a bigger difference than you think for two reasons:

1) The threads used to attach a 1" and 2oz flash hider are now being used to support a can that weighs 19-27oz and might be as long as 9".

2) It is not unusual for the threading on a standard production AR barrel to be a little off and not concentric. Not a big deal for a flash hider or muzzle brake. Big deal for a suppressor since you can get baffle strikes that destroy the suppressor.

With an SBR, you also need to keep in mind that you are putting a lot more gas and unburnt powder into the suppressor, so heat will build up faster and the blast baffle will take more of a beating. Also keep in mind that some manufacturers don't warranty their products on the shorter barrels. You will want to check that out before you buy.

Remember that a suppressor that can come apart for cleaning, can come apart.

You can get a really good 223 suppressor for $600-700. I've tested the HALO against the M4-2000 and they are more or less similar.

Check out yankee hill machine. They make a .308 QD can that also works great on .223, it reduces it to about the sound of a .22 rimfire. Two birds with one stone?
