I'd appreciate anything anyone could tell me about factory ammo they have had good results with. I've already been warned off using steel, lacquered cases in it.
And I know about our domestic ammo almost invariably being made with .308 diameter bullets instead of the proper .311.
But I don't handload and I really want to find some ammo that will let let this carbine shoot up to it's potential.
A pic of the factory test target is here http://sigforum.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=674608412&f=9666031561&m=51260951
Thanks!:)

Ohh Yeah
I held one of these boys a few days ago. Awesome balance. SNAPS up to the shoulder. A real tight, sweet carbine. CZ knows how to make them.
That test target is impressive. MUCH better than the average AK, that's for sure!
What's the bore? .308" or .311"?

Actually I was just assuming that the folks in the Czech Republic would turn them out with the proper .311 bores. Maybe that is unwise?
Plus I never pass up a chance to use my whiz bang electronic calipers.
I'll measure it. :D

I have a preban Colt AR15 in 7.62 X 39. It has the .311 bore and Winchester White box has the correct .311 bullets. At least it did a couple years ago when I miked it. The only .308 bore 7.62 X 39 I'm aware of was the Mini 30 Ruger whose accuracy left something to be desired as many have posted.
The AR15 held good groups with the 7.62 X 39, similar to the same gun with 5.56 X 45. So it's not the cartridge, imho.

Yeah, the 7.62x39 is actually very nice. Once freed from the AK you can even put 150 grainers in it. It can be quite accurate, since there is nothing inherently wrong in its design.
That external box magazine harkins back to the earliest Mauser carbines. I like it.

Thanks BigG! I'll get ahold of a box of that stuff and pull a bullet see what it measures.:)

... But for me the backwards safety is a deal-breaker:( :banghead:
You got one with a really nice stock. You might want to strip and refinish it to show it off a little more. My gunsmith calls the factory CZ stock finish "gorilla snot," and he's probably being generous! :D
Great test target, btw.

I personally find CZ's to be quite attractive.
How do these guns do with the cheap Wolf and Barnaul plinking ammo?
I would really want one if I could shoot cheap blasting ammo out of it.

Over at the CZ forum www.czforum.com the general consensus is to avoid the steel cased, lacquer coated ammo. These guys don't have fairly loose chambers like most AK's.
Luckily I have a pantload of South African milsurp ammo with brass cases.
How it performs I'll just hafta see. :)

nextjoe:... But for me the backwards safety is a deal-breaker Me, too, but when I made that comment on rimfirecentral.com, I was reminded that not everyone slides a safety forward, and that the rearward action nicely mimics the cocking action of a lever action hammer. I wish there were a fix, though.

Jaywalker,
That's true, but *all* of my sporting rifles have back=safe/forward=fire safeties, and having one backwards gun would be a hassle. I have too much muscle memory built up, I guess :)
It *could* be fixed, but the cost of having it changed would probably equal or exceed the cost of the gun. Not worth it to me...
BTW, there is a conversion safety available for the CZ rimfires made by Jim Wisner. When I get around to buying one of those cute little guns, it's getting a new safety immediately :)
Best,
Joe

B27, I've got the CZ 527 and am enjoying it very much. CZ-USA says it's fine to shoot steel cased through this little rifle. Call their technical services at 913-321-1811 and they will confirm this. I got my 527 on June 2nd and the 60 rounds of Wolf 122 gr. fmj I put through it today brings my total round count fired through it to 500. All rounds fired have been steel cased and a mixture of Wolf 122 gr. fmj, Sellier&Bellot 122 gr. fmj, and Wolf 154 gr. sp. I've got a Leupold 2-7x33 mounted in Millett Angle-Loc medium rings. I saved one of my 100 yard targets from today (the best one of course!) and it's got four rounds going into one ragged hole and the fifth round a flyer out about an inch. The little rifle is very accurate with all the ammo I've tried. I'm curious to see what it will do with some premium ammo.
One thing I've discovered is that the tensioning screws have a great deal to do with accuracy. I've found that tightening the rear screw down most of the way before the front screw works best for me. I bought some Warne scope rings to try but I bought mediums and the bolt handle won't clear. If you get Warne rings be sure to get "high" mounts. Warne is going to let me exchange my medium for high when the have some in stock. I posted a review on the Range Report section of www.shootersville.net if you'd care to read it.
I traded a Mini-30 that would not group for the 527 and I'm very happy with the accuracy on the little bolt gun. I really hated to give up the Mini but I just couldn't get it to group with any ammo. I really like having an accurate rifle in 7.62x39 that shoots the really cheap stuff well.
Best regards,

I know it well, used to be a Grover when I first moved to OR and still spend a bit of time in Eugene. We must shoot. I like to blast a few rounds up by Cougar res from time to time.

I love the looks of that rifle. Wish they'd make in .243.
