I was wondering out of all the milsurp ammo, which is most common. It seems like a good idea to get a gun that's ammo is really common, and as we all know surplus ammo is usually the cheapest.

Common = ? Most guns in usage? Most plentiful by quantity? Most economical?

If by usage in the US, I'd vote for the 5.56 NATO but as we all know, the 5.56 NATO surplus these days is FAR from being the cheapest ....

If price is a concern, I think 7.62x54R is the best deal ... most of it is corrosive though so if you're lazy like me stay away.

Plenty and cheap - 7.62x54R. Stock it up now.

I agree the 7.62x54R is out there and cheap. Clean your gun after shooting and everything is fine. The good things is that the rifles are cheap also. A nice Mosin Nagant M-44 or 91/30 is easy to find and fairly cheap. There is nothing like shooting a M-44 or M-38 just before dark. The good 8mm and 7.62x51 surplus has dried up quickly. My useless .02 worth.
