G. I. style sights on a 1911

Lately, I find myself carrying my Sistema more and more. All I've had done to this weapon is a reliability and trigger job. Other than that it is bone stock.

Here's the deal. The more I carry and shoot this weapon, the more I find myself liking the issue sights. I also have an old Series 70 with aftermarket style sights to compare it with and when practicing at the range I don't seem to notice any real advantage with the aftermarket stuff.

I seem to pick up the front sight on both weapons just as quickly, and when practicing short range rapid fire and movement, I just ignore the rear sight on both weapons anyway.

At longer ranges, 25 to 100 yards, the Systema's finer sight picture really seems to help with precision shot placement.

Am I going crazy, or were those oldtimers on to something?

Regards

P.S. I'm really liking this weapon and am thinking of an accuracy upgrade for longer range shooting if I can do so without compromising reliability.

The little pimple (front sight) on the Govt 1911A1 serves the purpose pretty well with the exception you can't elevate it much for longer range before you are looking at the fat part of the slide.

The advantage of the larger sights is that you will pick up the front sight much quicker when in a panic mode...Defensive shooting....

I too prefer the smaller sights as I tend to shoot tighter groups with them, but alais..I find when under pressure the bigger the front sight the quicker on target..

Thats the story as I've learned it..I personally don't feel to handicapped by the small sight..Just makes you practice a bit more..LOL

Yep, tiny sights are good for precision shooting and they don't snag on clothing or dig into your softer spots, but the big sights are much easier to pick up when you are in a hurry to get off a shot.

If you're young and have good eyesight the original issue sights aren't that bad. They are no-snag and a bit less likely to get damaged. However under low light or as your eyesight goes to pot you'll find you'll be left point-shooting, as the sights will then be very hard to see.

That's one of the reasons I've always like the fixed MMC "combat" sights. Big enough to pick up, but they don't snag--and they're brutally strong.
