Been lurking for a while. I just got back from picking up my gun over my lunch hour. It's my first handgun, although I'm not entirely new to guns...just to owning them. Anyway, hurray for me. Hopefully it won't be the last. I really like the S&W 340 PD.

Oh yeah, the gun. You'd never guess. The box had a big "G" on it follwed by "lock". Somewhere it said something about 9mm. Compact 19 for those still reading. :D I know, I know...flame on brothers...

LOL just kidding, Glocks are fine handguns, I don't own any, but have shot a few and can see the draw to them. I will most likely own one some day, most likely the 19, 26, or possibly the 36. That single stack compact .45 has a strange draw to it as well.

I suggest, however, that you give some thought to a different first revolver. Don't get me wrong, I have a 340PD and appreciate it very much; it's on my hip now, as usually. But, it's not a very kind introduction to revolvers, which can be so pleasant and ergonomic in their more typical (i.e., longer and heavier) configurations.

Of course, if all you want is one wheelgun to carry with ultimate discretion, then the 340PD is it; but you will not have the fun practicing with it that you might with another gun, like a 4" 66 or 686. Still, you've gotta give the world of wheels a spin.

I agree with you on having to have a wheel. How is the 340PD to shoot 38s/38 +p ?

.38 is really okay, in terms of recoil--though still not easy to shoot accurately with the combination of that long DA trigger pull, light weight, and short sight radius.

.38+p is really what I was thinking of when I referred to 'not fun'. It's doable and not uncomfortable for the first box, but not something you're going to want to go out and shoot for pure entertainment. You know you're practicing.

.357 is a whole nuther question. It hurts, no ifs, ands, or buts. Still controllable with something like Rem .357 Golden Sabers, but a MUCH more jarring experience than shooting a really full power .357 (Georgia Arms Deerstoppers, 158 gr. @ ca. 1350 fps) from, say, a 4" 66.

The 340 is an admirable gun, honestly, and I'm not letting anyone have mine, but it's designed for a very precise purpose and not much more. Hence my suggestion that it might not be the ideal first wheelgun.

IMHO, the G19 is a super firearm. Good inexpensive practice ammo at Wal-Mart (100 rds for 11.00). lots of doo-dads for you to try after you get comfy shooting.
