Our elk group was just talking about needing a scabbard for a horse rifle, and that we had no experience hunting off horseback. The horses are used to pack meat.

Do you have a preference for butt forward or aft? Seems like butt forward on the left side is the way to go, so its accessible when you dismount, and won't lose it up a hill...

Yes, that would seem the best, but it is not wise to have it up front because it is not protected that way. It will be the first thing hit when going through the brush and such.

This ain't the movies...You are not going to be taking shots from the bakc of the horse. You probbably won't be using a levergun with iron sights either correct?

You need to protect that rifle and the optics.

That Scabbard, if you click the link a read the article, was made for a tractor. A saddle scabbard is a tad different.;)
