Does anybdy have their velocities with Varget in 6.5x55 out of a 23-24 inch barrel and 140 grain bullets? I was wondering what to expect if I treid this combo. It looks like I will get more speed out of R15, R19 or H4350 definitely but alot of people are reccomending Varget.

One more R22 fan with 125 and up bullet wgts. I tried Varget with the 100-120 gr bullets a few years ago and wasn`t impressed. Never did crono it though.

BsChoy,

You really need to use a slower powder than Varget. RL22, N160, and H4350 are all good choices.

This goes back to what I mentioned in the other thread. Varget is kind of like a blanket recommendation. It can be used, but there are better choices. It will match up well with R-15, but not R-19 and H4350 at 60,000 PSI. R-22 is a good choice for 140s in the 24" tube, but if you shoot 120 and 129s also, you'll probably do better with R-19 or H4350. If you plan to load all three weights and I take it your trying to nail down something you can buy locally, take a look at the data for IMR or H 4831.;)

I figured as much was just hopefull on using something already in the stable. Its easier to justify buying more powder when you use it for more than one round ya know. Thanks guys.

If you have access to this powder, consider Norma MRP. Excellent accuracy. More than that, I found N 165 very consistent - with the difference to RL 22. N 160 on the other hand has a nasty tendency to heat up the barrel rather quickly. H 380 is not a bad choice either.

Coincidentally, Grafs is running a sale on MRP. For those that might not be aware, R-22 is a twin of MRP and made for Alliant by Norma, whether or not they are identical twins, I can't say, but there are a number of reloaders that feel they are.;)
