any life threatening encounters in which "you have used" or "almost about to use" your defense handgun to protect yourself or of others? any short true account stories would be worth to hear.

Only two, and neither was a close call for me. The first was an escaped prisoner running through our neighborhood. He was eventually captured by the LEOs hiding under someone's shed.
In the second instance, I looked out the window and there were LEOs with guns drawn circling around the house behind me. Turned out to be a false alarm.
In both cases, I locked the doors and dropped my .38 into my pocket. I hope that's as bad as it gets.

Ratzinger--
Yup, just outside of Cleveland. You'd make a great detective!

When I was eight years old, we were spending the day at my godfather's house. His neighbor from across the street came over and started shooting at everyone with a 12 gauge and 00 buckshot. My godfather was a hunter with a small arsenal in his house. My dad managed to get to the back of the house, secure a shotgun passed through the window by my mom along with some rounds (#4 steel magnum), and he ended the shooting. The old neighbor had a handgun as well, but it was never fired.
Another situation was when I was 12 years old. We were driving back from a Christmas parade, in our vehicle following an aunt and my grandmother in another vehicle. My aunt slammed her brakes when the person in front slammed on his for no apparent reason. She stopped no less than three feet from his rear bumber but he jumped out his car raising hell about suing her. He went to her window to scream at her and she rolled her window up. This just angered him more. He went to his car and pulled a small pistol. At this sight my mom made me hand her the twelve gauge that we kept in the back seat just incase, but to be relevant there was a .38 in the center console but anytime a shotgun is available, it makes more sense. I handed it to her and she kept it across her lap, not flashing it around or anything, and laid on the horn. The guy looked up surprised to see a couple dozen vehicles worth of witnesses and drove off in a hurry. I have no doubt that had that man started walking towards my aunt and grandmother that my mom would have engaged him, but I am thankful that she did not have to.

Lots of times.........in RVN.
Only once in the US. Living in an apartment in El Paso. Not the nicest section of town but what my wife and I could afford on my Army pay. A guy started coming in our ground floor window one night even though I yelled at him to get out. He kept coming until he heard me cock the .357 revolver. Then he said something I couldn't understand and was gone. Cops told me that if I was to shoot, make sure they fell inside in the apartment rather than outside. Seems the judge used this as an indication of how iminent the threat was. All that was 40 years ago. Never had a need since. Hope my luck holds up now that I'm an old geezer.

Always thankful, but beyond that, showed once, pulled once (stopped both an assault on myself & a robbery) . . . no shots fired. After the LEO had responded some 5 minutes later to the latter & had checked my concealed carry permit, he said, "Guess it was a good thing you were in here tonight." Moral: Never go to the corner store prior to leaving for a duck-hunting trip without insurance . . .

Unfortunately I had to draw my weapon once while on business.
I was at one of the two story hotels that the rooms doors are open to the outside. I was on the 2nd floor, three doors down from the centrally located stairwell. As I swiped the door key, in my perifrial vision, to my strong side right I saw movement, and stopped. After a minute or so I turned the knob and leaned down to pick up my bags. A large man, a little bigger than my 6' 6" and 300lb frame came around the corner of the stairwell, in a fast pace, raising what looked like a 1" galvanized pipe, above his head as if he was going to follow me in and do God only knows what. I immediately dropped my bags and drew my 4" 1911, from under my shirt and thumbed off the safety just in time to level it between his eyes. He performed a 180 degree turn faster than a gymnist in the olympics, and letout a yelp, like a dog that had been kicked. He retreated the way he came and the last I saw of him, he was running across an open field full speed. I watched him run completely out of sight. I reholstered my gun and went inside. After I quit shaking, I called the manager and left the rest to him to report to the local authorities. I thanked God many times that night that I not only had a gun, but did not have to fire it......especially since I had just started to apply pressure to the trigger when the BG turned to retreat.

During the Watts riot of 1965, my parents' home was outside the riot area but we could see the fires, smell the smoke, and if the wind was right hear gunshots.
I sat on our garage rooftop with my Marlin .22, the only firearm in the house, watching the 'fun'. I worked at the Crenshaw Blvd. May Company and was sent home from work early as the store closed because of the riot threat.
While sitting guard on the rooftop, a car drove into the neighborhood and stopped in front of my house in the middle of the road. Some men got out who obviously didn't belong in the neighborhood and started talking amongst themselves.
I have no idea why they were there, but it didn't look good. I resolved that if I saw weapons or Molotov cocktails and they advanced on my house or my neighbors, I was going to start shooting.
For some reason they got back in their car and drove off. I was really happy to see that.
