And the results: 8 shots (ran out of ammo or it would have been ten), 100yds, prone unsupported. I dropped the two 9's as I started to get tired toward the end.......

Where'd you get the buttstock with the adjustable comb?

I made it out of an old G1 buttstock I had scrapped, intending to use it as a prototype and "learning experience", but it turned out OK so I refinished it and kept it. It's adjustable for height only at this point, in 1/8" steps (detents milled into the assy.). I also cut it down so the length of pull was much shorter - now it fits me better with a heavy shooting jacket as well as brings the point of balance back a little so I'm not stretching out my weak hand so far.

WOW! That's one nice rifle!!!
I have been thinking about building one, but I never thought you could get accuracy like that from one. What kind of trick stuff did you do to it? I would like to build one similar to yours, but setup for a scope.

I like it..a lot, actually. Are you going to start competing with it?

The heart of the rig is a 24" Shilen match-grade heavy barrel that Ed Vandenberg turned down from a blank, installed a Belgian HB gasblock, and mounted and headspaced for me. I also had him install his free-floating handguard, and do a trigger job while he had it.

It has a TAPCO scopemount with a Lipski AR-15 base (had to modify it a little to fit the TAPCO base), and the PNW sight (adjustable for 72 MOA windage AND elevation) bolted to that. Add the Gehmann 510 adjustable rear iris and you're done in the rear. The front is a Medesha base (adjustable for elevation as well) with a custom bushing, and RPA 22mm globe, and a set of interchangeable metal apertures.

I added the sights, mounted a cut down rail and handstop, and made the adj. cheekpiece buttstock out of an old G1 stock I had scrapped. It's adjustable for height in 1/8" steps (detents milled into the mating assemblies), but with the adjustable front base I pretty much leave it where it is. I also cut down the length of pull quite a bit to make it fit me better when wearing a heavy shooting jacket and move the balance point of the gun back so I wasn't stretching out so far with my weak hand. The final touch is the cut down mag (had a dented one lying around). The flat bottom makes a very steady support for shooting in the standing position, and works as a handrest (but is perfectly legal).

"Are you going to start competing with it?"

That's how all this started - I was shooting highpower with my STG-58 and got interested enough to want to pursue it. I had a nice tax refund a couple years ago and started to buy a tricked out AR-15, but then thought "WHY???? - I hate the mousegun!". I ended up being able to do all of this to my beloved FAL for less than the cost of the AR-15 (minus the sights, which can be used on any gun), and I get to shoot a "real" cartridge at the same time :D

I think my favorite moment (of hearing the "why don't you buy a real gun?" comments from the mousegunners) was at Oak Ridge last year when I went to a long range match (600yds prone). All the old timers looked at me and shook their heads, saying that they've "never even had a FAL get on paper here." Well, my skills aren't nearly enough to show up all those high masters and masters there, but I shot several sub-MOA groups and was always "on paper." That was plenty good enough for me considering it was my first long-range match............

As you know, www.weaponarts.com makes an FAL buttstock that's adjustable but it's always seemed to be a bit "much' to me. I like your more spare design much better.
Please let us know if anyone ever does start producing them for sale.:)

Someone posted it on the FALFiles.com/Forums awhile back. I like that Weapons Art stock/ grip, unfortunately I didn't win it in the FalFiles "lottery." The front Vandenberg handguard is sweet too.
